Sydney Williams (Senior) says Elphaba’s journey as an outcast is really powerful! She faces so much discrimination and misunderstanding because of her green skin and beliefs. She then states, “It shows how society can be quick to judge those who are different. Her struggle to find her place and stand up for what she believes in is super inspiring.”
Back in 2019, Sydney saw Wicked on Broadway in New York City, “This musical has always resonated with me, but to see it on film with a new look and actors had me feeling very sentimental.” When she first heard about the movie being made, she was afraid of the artistic choices the director would make, but she ended up being surprised by how well they captured the feeling of actually being in OZ, “The sets were phenomenal including the actors, costumes, and effects which made this story feel even more real.” Sydney was most excited about hearing the song “Popular”, “Ariana Grande definitely did not disappoint. She had me on the edge of my seat, wanting to sing and dance around the theater,” she states. Sydney feels that her voice made Glinda come more to life than ever, and the casting was just perfect! She also loved how Grande put her own twist on the song while still keeping the classic vibe as well. She says she relates more to Glinda “because of her growth throughout the story.” She continues, “Initially, she is seen as someone who is self-centered and focused on appearances. However, as the plot progresses, she learns the importance of empathy, understanding, and standing up for what is right.” Sydney then went on to say, throughout the movie, Elphaba and Glinda grow into close friends as they learn to appreciate each other's differences. Sydney gives insight on seeing this movie, “ Wicked definitely changes how you view The Wizard of Oz! You start to see the characters in a new light, especially Elphaba and Glinda, it makes you realize that there's always more to a story than what meets the eye.” “Elphaba's motivations and struggles give depth to her character, and you can understand why she acts the way she does in The Wizard of Oz. It’s like you get to see the backstory and the reasons behind their actions, which makes the whole story more complex.” Finally, Sydney states that she loves reading into the theories about Wicked part 2 and can’t wait to see it!
Alyssa Baldwin (Sophomore) speaks on Elphaba’s social transformation throughout the film, “I think it was sad because her own dad treated her so horribly, but she also learned not to care what others thought.” A moment that surprised her was when the wizard and Madame Morrible became evil and were just using Elphaba. “That was so crazy, I wasn’t expecting that at all.” Alyssa says, “No One Mourns the Wicked” is her favorite song because she loves Jeff Goldblum.
Alyssa comments that she would like the character she resonates with the most to be Glinda, “. . . But I'm most likely Boq because I’m such a scaredy cat. . .” In the beginning Glinda and Elphaba do not like each other,” She gives insight into the evolution of the main duo’s relationship, “Glinda is jealous that she isn’t Madame Morrible’s favorite and Glinda sabotages Elphaba by making her go to the Ozdust Ball in the witch outfit when Elphaba actually made Madame Morrible gift Glinda a spot in her sorcerer class at Shiz and from then on Glinda helped out Elphaba and they became close.” Similar to others who have seen the film, Alyssa said that Wicked changed her perspective on the original classic The Wizard of Oz film, “. . . in The Wizard of Oz, now I know there’s a whole other storyline going on, or at least that Glinda and Elphaba have a whole story and you know that they used to be very close friends.” Hayden Ross (Senior) explains how Elphaba’s story in Wicked represents outcasts and choosing to be yourself. Hayden relates to Elphaba as she agrees that “everyone feels like an outcast sometimes even if it’s not as extreme as Elphaba.” Hayden’s admiration for the Wicked musical started further back when she got to see Wicked on Broadway two times. Both times she saw the musical she was let down, “I was very surprised that we always see Elphaba as such a bad person but in reality, she was one of the strongest characters in the show.” Feeling a connection with Elphaba, Hayden says, “Honestly, I do relate to Elphaba the most. Being in theater for most of my life has not only made me stand out from some people, but it has helped me to be comfortable in my own skin.” Behind the movie, Hayden Ross was impressed with not only the storyline but the work that was put into it. “I loved dancing through life. I loved it for the vocals and the music obviously, but I was more impressed by the choreography and technical scenes behind the song itself.” Hayden Ross will forever have a deep appreciation for the musical, “Wicked made me realize that there is so much more behind one of the most well-known stories,” she continues, “Things aren’t always as they seem at first sight and Wicked does a great job at showing how this is true even for things as classic as The Wizard of Oz.” Arynn Clayton (Sophomore) thinks “Elphaba's journey as a whole added a lot to the story and who she was as a character.” She says it allowed us to understand how complex she is as a character and see the story from her perspective. The moment Elphaba helped the professor really resonated deeply with her because it showed how caring and understanding her Character is and reflected the overall theme of the [movie]. “I’m Not That Girl” stuck with me because it reflected how Elphaba felt not only in her relationship with Fiyero but also in the world in general, I heavily related to it.” Arynn relates most to Elphaba because she’s an outcast in a [world] that expects you to be perfect, but she doesn’t let that stop her from reaching her goals and doing what’s right. Jordin Galvan (Sophomore) thinks that Elphaba’s journey as an “outcast” is inspiring. Even though she would be deemed as abnormal to others because she was green, she still stood her ground and never tried to change herself. “A moment that resonated with me when Elphaba got the head of the school to invite her along with her about seeing a wizard because she knew it was her dream even though Glinda also deemed her abnormal,” she stated. Jordin said, “The song that stood out the most to me was Popular because it tells how Glinda wanted to make Elphaba popular because she said that she was an “outcast,” plus it’s overall a catchy song.” She then continues to say, “I think the character I most relate to is Glinda because she is cute and she decided to become friends with Elphaba knowing it could potentially make her social status decline because Elphaba was an outcast.” She sees Wizard of Oz as a villain now because he only wants to use a witch capable of reading the book to do bad. Overall, these students seemed to enjoy this movie, and the feelings that came with it. They really got into depth about Elphaba's journey and how she dealt with things as an outcast.
