WGHS students give their thoughts and opinions on the Menendez brothers new show on netflix about their case that came out on September 19, 2024. by Cheyenne Seagraves ![]() WGHS students give their thoughts and opinions on the Menendez brothers new show on Netflix about their case that came out on September 19, 2024. Alyssa Baldwin (10) gives a little background to the case, “It’s a story of abuse that had come to an unfortunate conclusion in search of internal peace for the brothers. Eric and Lyle Menendez were physically, sexually, and mentally abused by their parents for years leading up to their eventual murder.” She thinks that the conclusion of them killing their parents was in the heat of a moment. It appeared to be the only idea that was rational [to the brothers], they were terrified and exhausted of the lives they were stuck in because of their parents. She says, “The show did not do them justice, it represented them as evil people that gave no remorse whatsoever, but when you watch the court trials you can see a completely different perspective than what the show gave off. It was a total attack.” The show didn’t sway her opinion in the slightest, “It’s actually quite irritating that that was the objective.” [The show] didn't sway her because she had researched the case so deeply for years. She finished by saying the actors are obviously talented with the prompt they were given but the boys weren’t portrayed accurately. Misty Proffitt (12) says she’s heard of the Menendez brother’s case on TikTok, but she only knows the basic things about the case, such as why they’re in jail, and that their parents abused them. She states, “I think that the Menendez brothers didn’t deserve this much time in jail for what they did just because of the abuse they went through... I'm not saying that murdering their parents was the right thing to do and that they don’t deserve jail for that, but they went through way too much as children to deserve 20+ years in jail.” ![]() She continues to say she thinks the show does a good job at representing that point in their lives. She also says “...I've heard that it isn’t exactly the true story.” She then goes on to say the show didn’t necessarily sway her opinion because she’s always thought that they didn’t deserve that much time. She ends with, “I think they were the perfect actors for this show/series. It really showed how different the boys were.” Maisey Wood (12) starts off saying, “They had a bad home life and just wanted an escape.... I think the show is good for depicting some of what happened, but I think there are multiple parts that are portrayed wrong or some details that were incorrect.” She had always thought that they should not have been sentenced the way they were because of all the trauma that led them to kill their parents and the show kept her firm in her opinion. She continues, “I think they did a great job with the acting. It was very emotional, but I think some characteristics of the real Menendez brothers may be different…” The Monsters show that was released on September 19, 2024 tells the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez and how they executed a plan to kill their parents because of the abuse that they were enduring.
