WGHS Green & Blackfriars put on their performance of "The Giver" on October 24, 2024. The play was part of the One Act competition during the Fall. by Lochlan Chastain and Robert Arizmendi ![]() The show is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a highly controlled, dystopian society. Memories are erased to maintain order, and color has even been forgotten. The main male protagonist, Jonas, has a special job where he receives the memories of the past. Jonas learns of the pain, fear, love, and sorrow of the past and becomes troubled by the memories. The memories transform his perception of life and he faces the difficult decision to either hold the memories like his mentor, The Giver, has done or to escape the community to restore humanity. WGHS Sophomore, Maddox Daher, plays the lead, Jonas, in the play. He shared his experiences in the making of the show and his thought process going into it. “What drew me most to my character was definitely the challenge. Playing such an emotionally heavy character was a challenge that I was very excited to take on. I think the importance of feeling has stayed with me. I think it’s always important to have feelings and address them instead of hiding them.” “The Giver does a great job of showing us a world without feeling and how bland it is. The scene I find the most emotional to act in is the “Play War” scene. The reason for this is that before Jonas became The Receiver, I’d imagine he played this game. So seeing how cruel the game actually is makes me emotional.” “I think the themes of 'The Giver' don’t relate to high school students as much. However, I do think high school students could imagine a world without the things we take for granted.” WGHS Senior, Macie McDuffie, who played Asher, also gave insight into the behind-the-scenes of "The Giver". “Originally I didn’t want to play Asher, but now playing him, I see why I got him. We’re very similar people, and I can connect with his character more. The most challenging thing for me to perform was the “play War” scene because I kept messing up my lines.” “'The Giver' was very easy for me to connect with. The censorship that is presented makes the audience think. I think that there are good memories and there are bad memories, and I think if we have all our memories it’s better because it is ours in the first place. If we take away our bad memories we can never learn from them and appreciate the good memories more.” The show is truly a spectacle and is a must-see for any person. The show dates are October 25, and October 28th-29th, and will be competing on the 26th against other schools. Other shows that will be performed by the Green and Blackfriars are A Christmas Carol, Circus Olympus, 39 Steps, Fairytale Courtroom, and Spongebob. Keep a look out for announcements on show dates because you don’t want to miss the talent and entertainment that the Green and Blackfriars produce. The show was 4.5 forgotten apples out of 5.
