The Dawgs Return to the Top 25
For the first time since 2011 , the Georgia Bulldogs are ranked in the AP Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs roll into the top 25 with impressive wins over #8-ranked Kentucky and #17-ranked Oklahoma (ESPN). (image via Conor Dillon) Georgia’s freshmen have stepped up this season. Asa Newell, former 5-Star, is averaging 15.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG and is shooting 58.1% from the field (247 Sports ESPN). Somto Cyril is a 6’11” center from Nigeria. He was originally committed to the Kentucky Wildcats, but decommitted on April 10th, 2024 and committed to UGA, 19 days later. Cyril is averaging 4.9 RPG and 2 BPG in his freshman campaign (247 Sports, ESPN). JAN 16 UPDATE: Georgia is 14-3 after the loss to Tennessee, and will continue their Road to the Spring Dance against the top ranked Auburn Tigers, in Auburn, on Saturday the 19th.
Upset? Another Upset? Another One?!
#21 Ole Miss Rebels 74-64 #5 Alabama Crimson Tide (ESPN, 1/14/25) Malik Dia almost had a 20-20 game, scoring 23 points and 19 rebounds. The Crimson Tide could not limit turnovers, achieving 21, which is three times more than the Rebels. Ole Miss sits at 15-2 and looks like a dangerous team heading into SEC play. #1 Tennessee Volunteers 43-73 #8 Florida Gators (ESPN, 1/7/25) The Gators blowout of the Volunteers was nothing short of surprising to College Basketball fans. The Volunteers shot 21.4% from the field and were outrebounded by nearly 20. This loss dropped the Vols down to #6, but a bounce-back win vs. Georgia should bump them up a bit, especially with the Alabama loss. Missouri Tigers 83-82 #5 Florida Gators (ESPN, 1/14/25) The Missouri Tigers are no stranger to a good upset. Earlier in the season, the Tigers beat former #1 team, the Kansas Jayhawks, in Missouri. Missouri struck again, beating the Florida Gators in Gainesville. It was neck and neck and went down to the final buzzer, as the Tigers pulled away late to secure the victory. #9 UConn Huskies 66-68 Villanova Wildcats (ESPN, 1/8/25) The UConn Huskies entered the game on an eight game win streak, with ranked wins over Gonzaga and Baylor, but couldn’t pull through against the Wildcats. UConn shot better from the field and outrebounded the Wildcats, but Eric Dixon started to heat up in the second half, securing the Villanova victory.
WG Insight
Head basketball coach, Coach Whitley, said, “Memphis is ranked too high because they are in a weaker conference.” He continues, “UConn is ranked too low because they have only lost about four games and Missouri deserves to be ranked because they're 13-3 and have had a tougher schedule than others.”
We are almost through the midway point throughout the season; big games have yet to be played, but some big teams have come to play, big upsets and more to come.
