The Michigan Wolverines defeated the UConn Huskies, 69-63, in a close battle. Headed into the game, the Wolverines were dominant throughout March Madness, with their closest win being a 13-point victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sweet 16.

UConn was no stranger to national championships. Entering the game, the Huskies were 6-0 in championship games, dating back to 1999. They have been to three of the last four national championships (2023, 2024, 2026).

Junior Elliot Cadeau was big for the Wolverines, scoring 19 points and stealing the ball twice. Sophomore Morez Johnson Jr. was also big, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking two shots. Cadeau has already confirmed he will return for his senior season with the Wolverines, while Johnson Jr. is considering returning. In an interview from 247 Sports, he said, “I have no issue with coming back to Michigan and trying to repeat.” It all depends on his NBA draft stock.

UConn legend Alex Karaban was big in his final game as a Husky. He scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Former Wolverine Tarris Reed Jr., who played with the Wolverines for the first two seasons of his collegiate career, also had a double-double. He scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against his former team.

The Wolverines dominated their section of the bracket. In the Round of 64, they defeated the #16-seeded Howard Bison, 101-80. In the Round of 32, they defeated the #9-seeded Saint Louis Billikens, 95-72. In the Sweet 16, they had their closest victory over the #4-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide, 90-77. In the Elite 8, they defeated the #6-seeded Tennessee Volunteers in a complete and utter blowout, 95-62.

In the Final Four, the Wolverines faced their toughest test yet against the National Champion favorite, #1-seeded Arizona Wildcats. However, it was no problem as they defeated the Wildcats, 91-73, due to a dominant first half. This path set up the National Championship against the #2-seeded UConn Huskies.

First Time Since… When?(Source: USA Today)
The Wolverines get to hoist the trophy for the first time in 37 years. Their last national championship victory was in 1989, when they defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 80-79 in overtime.
They had multiple chances at claiming another title, including their stretch in the mid-1990s with the famous Fab Five, featuring future NBA stars Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, and Juwan Howard.
Baseball Coach Cody Tait is a huge Michigan Wolverines fan. He says the Michigan National Championship victory is “reassuring that Michigan is the top premier sports program in all colleges.” Coach Tait is very confident in his Wolverines.

Although the college basketball season has come to a close, college sports are far from over. College baseball and college softball are underway and in the middle of their seasons, as well as the WNBA Draft just occurring on Monday, April 13. Be sure to tune in to your favorite teams and watch as fans wait for the 2026-2027 college basketball campaign!
