Kendrick Lamar went on an all-star run in 2024, highlighted by his historic feud with fellow rapper Drake in the first half. Now, his work pays off as he brings home the Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year awards for his year-defining diss-track “Not Like Us”, a total of five Grammys, the most of the night. "We gon’ dedicate this one to the city," he said, speaking about his hometown of Compton and LA as a whole. "I can’t give enough thanks to these places that I rolled around since high school, and most importantly the people and the families out in Palisades and Altadena. This is a true testament that we will continue to restore this city."
Beyoncé was awarded Album of the Year and Best Country Album for her country record “Cowboy Carter”, a diversion from her usual style and a controversial move among fans. Either way, it is a testament to the growing popularity of country music in the global music scene, with many already-established artists making the jump to the genre such as Post Malone and Jelly Roll. Chappell Roan won Best New Artist of 2024, beating out close competition against her fellow nominees. As she accepted the award, she took the moment to advocate for a worthy cause, saying, "I told myself, if I ever won a Grammy, and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off artists would offer a living wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists." Other awards went to Sabrina Carpenter for Best Pop Vocal Album, Doechii for Best Rap Album, Shakira for Best Latin Pop Album, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Gojira for Best Metal Performance for their iconic set at the Paris Olympics in June. Other events at the Grammys include stunning performances from the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, and Charli XCX, a tear-jerking tribute to the late music legend Quincy Jones, Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori allegedly being escorted off of the red carpet after she arrived essentially completely nude, and the firefighters of Los Angeles being honored both during the ceremony and on the red carpet.
