On May 17th, 2024 Billie Eilish released an album called Hit Me Hard and Soft. It is streaming on all platforms (YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Etc.). The reason Billie made this album is because it delves into her perceptions of self, love, and happiness, providing her audience a raw look into her thoughts and emotions.
Avalyn Godoy (junior) gives her opinion on the album, “I think it was a really good album, and she put a lot of heartfelt emotion into it; I think she explained a lot of different situations in song form so it’s easy to relate to.” The song “Wildflower” is Avalyn's favorite song from the album. She felt like it was the one she connected with the most, “Every time I heard it, it was just my song.” She shared that wasn’t honestly expecting anything amazing. One thing she said she did expect was for the album to be something like “Happier Than Ever”. Avalyn then said, “She kinda threw me for a whim more like… chill vibes, but it was still good. I really really liked it.” Avalyn felt like Billie matured, her emotions had grown, and Billie has grown to be able to put it into words a lot better. “I think [Hit Me Hard and Soft] versus her old music is better.” Avalyn’s favorite album has to be When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? because it has the song "I Love You” in it. Mya Brown (junior) thought that the album was really great and very different. She also thought that it was a lot calmer than what [Billie Eilish] normally does. She then told us that her favorite song was "Lunch" because it was a lot relatable and she felt like she connected to it. Mya thought that the album was going to be sad and depressing like the previous songs. But when she heard it and started listening to it, she started liking it and realized that it was something she could listen to. “Compared to the others I would say her other songs were really rock and emo, I guess… a little crazy. But this one was more nostalgic.” She then said that this album has to be one of her favorites only because of the different types of emotions it gave off. Abygaelle Densil (junior) thought that the album was really good. As she continued, “very comforting and it eases your mind a little. She then said that "Wildflower" was her favorite, and that she loved it so much. “How does she go from a low note to a high note… I don’t know but I love the vibe.” Abygaelle said that she wasn’t expecting much… just the usual heartbreaking songs that she normally puts out. But this time it wasn’t heartbreaking like she expected. More to like songs she can relate to and listen to. She felt like Billie matured when she wrote this album because it’s not like the rest that she has listened to. She then continued to say “With this new album, I would say she matured more than her past albums.” P.S. I know this is Abygaelle’s part, but a lot of other people feel like she has matured with this new album. She finished by saying that her favorite album by Billie Eilish would be “Happier Than Ever”. Aedynne Chastain (sophomore) said that she really liked the album and I believed her because she literally had the shirt on. “I love it! I mean I literally have the shirt on.” Aedynne had two songs that she liked from the album. “Probably 'Wildflower' or 'Lunch'. With 'Wildflower', I feel like I relate to them.” She related to "Lunch" because of the words that Billie was saying. She honestly didn’t know what to expect from the album, “I don’t know what it was… because her other songs are more slow, but these ones were just upbeat.” Aedynne says that this album, compared to the other ones, is way better. “It relates to her. In an interview, she was just saying how she feels like this relates to her more, but in the other ones she was just singing.” She continued to say that her favorite album from Billie had to be “Don’t Smile At Me” because that was when she started listening to Billie. She finished by saying “Hit Me Hard and Soft" was just… really pretty.” For the most part, the album received positive reviews. Students thought it was much better than her other albums, and some said otherwise. Most of the students thought that this new album showed more maturity and it was very relatable, the two most liked songs from this album were "Lunch" and "Wildflower". Even though expectations weren’t so high, this album is different from Billie’s past albums. The album was really good, and we can’t wait to see what else she has coming!
