With a new basketball season just beginning, both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams at WGHS are stepping onto the court with high hopes and even higher energy.

For Jaelyn Harris, a Senior at WGHS, this year feels like a chance to prove what the team can really do. “I’m expecting a lot from this season. I think we have a lot of talent and potential. I genuinely believe that we can make it to state,” she said. Though she admits she’s worried about underperforming, her excitement for region games and senior night keeps her focused on the good ahead.

Her teammate Anniston Thompson, a senior in WGHS, shares the same optimism. “I’m expecting our team to have fun together, win or lose, and for us to grow from now to January,” she said. For Aniston it’s less about the scoreboard and more about the connections they build along the way. “I’m more excited to see everyone’s growth this season and to just bond with the team off and on the court.”

On the boys’ side, Jordon McCollum, a Junior in WGHS, is confident that this season will be a big step up. “I think we’re going to be a lot better than last year because we had a really, really young program,” he said. Even though the team doesn’t have much height, he believes their chemistry and heart will carry them far. “It feels nice to just compete with everybody,” he added.

Zac McDaniel, a Senior at WGHS, is a returning player and senior, is looking forward to making his final season one to remember. “I’m expecting big things. I think we’ve got a lot of players coming back this year, and I think we got some new faces too that are going to make a difference,” he said. For him, it’s not just about winning—it’s about enjoying every moment. “It’s the last ride with all my friends… doing something I enjoy doing is going to be fun, just doing it one last time.”
As both teams head into the season, one thing’s clear: they’re ready to play hard, grow together, and make this year unforgettable.
