Catherine O’Hara, the Canadian-born actress and comedian whose career spanned more than five decades, left an unforgettable mark on film and television before her death at age 71 on January 30, 2026. From her early days as a cast member on the influential comedy series SCTV to her Emmy-winning performance as Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, O'Hara's talent for blending sharp wit with genuine heart made her one of the most beloved performers of her generation. Her work in iconic films such as Home Alone and Beetlejuice showcased her extraordinary range – from heartfelt motherly roles to off-the-wall comedic characters – making her a household name and a constant presence in pop culture for decades.
O’Hara’s journey in entertainment began in Toronto as a member of the Second City comedy troupe, where her knack for character work and improvisation quickly became evident. She went on to break into Hollywood, working with celebrated directors like Tim Burton and Martin Scorsese and starring in projects that became cultural touchstones. Later in life, she enjoyed a career renaissance with Schitt’s Creek, earning critical acclaim and multiple awards that solidified her legacy as a comedy legend. In her final years, she continued to take on challenging roles, receiving Emmy nominations for her performances in The Last of Us and The Studio. (People)(Forbes)

Beyond her professional accomplishments, O’Hara was known for her grounded, vibrant personal life. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of Beetlejuice, and the couple raised two sons, Matthew and Luke, together. Even as her public career soared, she treasured her home life and often spoke fondly of her family, crediting her own parents and her lively childhood as the foundation for her sense of humor and warmth. To those who knew her personally and professionally, O’Hara was more than a brilliant performer – she was a source of joy, loyalty, and generosity. After news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from friends and collaborators across the entertainment world. Home Alone co-star Macaulay Culkin honored her with a deeply personal message on his Instagram reflecting the enduring bond they shared from their first film together in 1990 through decades of friendship.
