The 8th week of the College Football season was full of ranked matchups. #5 Georgia traveled to #1 Texas, #7 Alabama and #11 Tennessee faced off in an intense rivalry matchup, and many more exciting games. by Drew Caraway and Sean Clift Georgia Handles Business in Austin (ESPN) The Georgia defense was on point, locking up Texas receivers and stopping the run game all night long. Carter Dillard, 11, said, “Texas just had a good start to their season. Our [Georgia's] defense showed up.” Trevor Etienne, Georgia's running back, found the end zone several times, peaking at three touchdowns. In the first half, the Dawg defense held Texas to 38 total yards in the first half and zero points until the second half, where they scored on the opening drive. Jalon Walker led the Dawgs defense with an amazing performance. The junior had three sacks and eight tackles, with all the sacks coming in the first half. The defense had seven total sacks on the night, forced three turnovers, and held the explosive Texas Offense to 259 total yards, a new season low. Tennessee Hands Alabama 2nd Loss (ESPN) Tennessee hosted their longtime rivals Alabama. It was a close game, but Tennessee came out on top. Alabama’s run defense was indigent, allowing Tennessee RB Dylan Sampson to rush for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Milroe, Alabama QB, threw two interceptions but still found Ryan Williams in the endzone for one touchdown. The Crimson Tide struggled heavily on converting on third down, going 3-14 and leading to seven punts in this game. Carter Dillard says, “I mean…I think Alabama is gonna sneak in [the CFB Playoff]. I feel like they are probably going to be one of the last seeds though.” Alabama had several penalties in this game leading to a loss of 115 yards. Even though Alabama had the ball most of the game, they couldn’t make the big plays in order to beat The Volunteers. This is the first time that the Crimson Tide has lost two games before November since 2006, one year before Nick Saban arrived (via ESPN). Vanderbilt Ranked for First Time in 11 Years (ESPN) The Vanderbilt Commodores have made history, this time in a positive way. For the first time in 11 years, the Commodores are ranked in the AP Poll. Even though Vanderbilt is ranked, Carter thinks “…there's no way they [Vanderbilt] makes the playoffs, they would have to win out the rest of their season and I don’t think they will.” After defeating Alabama, who was ranked #1 at the time, fans called for Vanderbilt to be ranked right then and there, but after two primetime wins against Kentucky and Ball State, the Commodores are finally ranked. Vanderbilt has a tough schedule ahead. They play #5 Texas, an away game at Auburn, South Carolina at home, #8 LSU in Death Valley, and #7 Tennessee at home (via ESPN). So the likelihood of Vanderbilt winning out is very low. However, anything can happen any given Saturday. Ashton Jeanty’s Dominance (CFB Reference) Most Heisman races in CFB History have been “QB Heavy,” especially in recent years. However, this year is different. Ashton Jeanty, Boise State RB, is currently the frontrunner for the award. Jeanty already has over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns in only six games (CFB Reference). He is currently on pace to compete with Barry Sanders’ Heisman Records set in 1988, with Sanders rushing for 2,628 rush yards and 37 touchdowns. (Brian Losness-Imagn Images) Jeanty has helped Boise State in the Playoff Push, with the new format including an auto-bid for the highest ranked Group of 5 Champion, which is currently Boise State at #17 with #23 Army and #24 Navy trailing close behind. This week of CFB has been exhilarating and game-changing. The playoffs are coming up soon and teams are getting in line to have a chance at fighting for a national championship on January 20th, 2025.
