The WGHS Color guard team explains what to expect at the Walnut Grove football games. WGHS student Memphis Thompson also gave her insight as to what she likes about the color guard.

Jordan Roberts (Junior), captain of the WGHS color guard, says her job is to take responsibility for her team. She became captain “Just by hard work, pushing myself, [and] being disciplined…” Jordan prides herself on the inclusiveness of the WGHS color guard, “[People are] allowed to be themselves… we can accept everyone.”

Gabriella Daniel (Junior) says that she thinks some people think it’s very cool, and some people don't understand it, “but for the most part I think people think it’s kind of cool.” She says that students can expect a good performance, good music, good facial expressions, just overall [good] stage presence.

She continues, “[Color guard] is really hard, it takes a lot of hand-eye coordination, and the band camp that we have to go through is very rigorous, so you push yourself a lot…” She then goes on to say that it’s 90 percent mind, and 10 percent body.

They practice every day except for Wednesdays and sometimes they practice on Saturdays. “Practice is challenging, yes, especially when we’re learning new things. If we’re not learning new things it’s usually fine, but I think the main part of practice is just the heat,” says Gabriella.

She decided to do color guard because her sister did it for 6 years, so she thought “Why not I'll give it a shot?” She does not think that color guard gets the praise it deserves, “I think everyone dogs on it, it’s actually really complicated and I highly doubt [just anyone].”

It’s not just the team members that enjoy the color guard; Memphis Thompson (Sophomore) loves to watch the halftime show at football games. “Honestly, it’s very entertaining…” She finishes saying, “I haven’t seen that many halftime shows, but at the [scrimmage], it was really good.”

The WGHS Color guard team works very hard preparing for their performance at the halftime show, and for their competitions. Let’s show our support for our school, football team, and color guard team by going and participating at the football games.
