The custodians here at Walnut Grove play an essential role in our community. They continue to ensure our school environment is clean, safe, and welcoming. by Talia Banks and Rylee Watson This year we have ten Beautification specialists, the head custodian is Billy Jordan with his crew of Johnie Crawford, Carlotta Brown, Rufus Brown, Nancy Durden, Linda Griffin, Mary Johnson, Bill Maddox, Garfield Wilson, and Marcel Sanda. Each member upholds an important role throughout the week. Many are assigned various duties or jobs throughout, and each custodian is greatly appreciated for their diligence and perseverance in maintaining a tidy school environment for students, teachers, and staff. Day in and day out these amazing people continue to create an honorable school atmosphere for our community. Carlotta Brown loves working as a Beautification specialist because, as he says, “I love my hours, I love the teachers, and being around the kids.” Bill Maddox explains why he finds satisfaction in being a part of the custodial staff: “I love working as a custodian. I like the staff, the students, and everything and just everyone here is so awesome.” He continues, “...Just to see the kids come through in the morning with a smile on their face and everything keeps me motivated and trying to help people have a safe and blessed day every day.” The custodians have a full schedule in the morning and afternoons, mostly filled with cleaning bathrooms, mopping halls, vacuuming classrooms, dusting windows, and of course picking up trash. Nancy Durden explains her daily routines, “My daily routine is hectic. It starts with the cafeteria where I clean after each lunch, and then after that, I’m responsible for cleaning C hall: cleaning up 18 classrooms and cleaning up the bathrooms. I’m always mopping, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping; you name it I’m doing it.” Many students express their gratitude for all the custodians by cleaning up their trash, saying thank you, and always greeting the custodians in the morning and afternoons. Jackson King shares how Mr. Bill Maddox impacts his day, “I have one custodian who makes an impact on my day and that's [Mr. Maddox] that fist bumps me every time I throw away my trash.” Both Ansleigh Arndt and Ellie Clower agree, “They do a lot for us and they clean up after us.” Then Clower adds, "They keep our school a good environment.” Coach Cockerm describes his admiration for the specialists, “They do a job well that a lot of people wouldn't want to do, and they take pride in what they do.” He furthermore explains, “They make the place beautiful and provide a service that's necessary for students to learn and for teachers to teach. I just like to remind them how important they are and thank them at any time I can.” The students are incredibly grateful to have such outstanding custodians working hard every day to keep our school superior and spotless. The custodians have done an incredible job so far, and many students and staff can’t wait to see what they do in the future for Walnut Grove High School.
