by Elmer Castillo Vazquez
The Walnut Grove flag football team is scheduled for the last match of the season. The coach, meanwhile, reminisces over a year that has been full of growth, pride, and unforgettable events. One thing that made this season particularly meaningful was the fact that it was his first year being part of the program. Reflecting on the journey, he said, “This was a really special season for a lot of reasons. First off, this was my first season being a part of this program, and it is something that I will take with me for a very long time.” The team not only achieved victories but also made history and even broke some individual school records, thus proving the program's strength in the number of talented players.

Upon being interviewed regarding his most enjoyable times, the coach made it clear that the community formed during the season was his mainstay. One thing that the coach found most rewarding was "getting to know these great athletes and observing them improving throughout the season.” He also pointed out, “A large proportion of them are multi-sport players and are involved in numerous clubs and activities, so it was really an honor to coach these student-athletes.” Their commitment and enthusiasm were obvious each time they found themselves playing.

The coach's positivity about the team’s foundation is already evident. “I trust that the future of Walnut Grove Flag Football is a bright one,” he said, naming the past and present at the same time. He also pointed out the role played by leadership, arguing that the partnership laid by Coaches Ben Williams and Emily Smith has helped the program develop.

With the JV and C-Team both finishing unbeaten, the coach is sure the momentum will continue. It has become clear that this season has created a legacy of teamwork, perseverance, and heart as the last game nears.
