As HBO works on the finishing touches of its highly anticipated Harry Potter television show, fans find themselves split in their opinions and excitement.
First announced on April 12, 2023, HBO’s upcoming show based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series has recently been stirring up controversy. Rowling herself has become known for having controversial opinions, and since the new show lists her as an executive producer, fans see this as the series siding with Rowling’s contentious views. Though it is unknown just how much the show’s creators and financiers agree with Rowling’s perspective, it does add some caution to viewers’ expectations. Bored Panda shares, “Author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender rights, race-bending casting, and muted VFX have remained at the center of the controversy surrounding the HBO-backed production,” and such controversies certainly don’t make it any easier for fans to support her work. Rowling’s personal views, however, aren’t the only controversial aspects of the impending HBO series. The classic Hogwarts house logos have been redesigned for the show, and many fans were not pleased with these new designs. These modern logos take on a more simplistic style—something that’s just not for everyone. Joe Foley on Creative Bloq highlights a fan complaint expressing, “This is hilarious, so we are witnessing the decay of art. The new crests look like AI-generated images. There are many passionate designers who would have done better. HBO is not interested in putting in effort.” But of course, not everyone is hating on these updated Hogwarts house visuals, or else they wouldn’t really be controversial. In fact, the new logos are seemingly more accurate to the books. “Ravenclaw's house crest has fixed one major error from the movies: its mascot is now an eagle, as in the books, rather than the arguably more fitting raven that was on the blue crest across Warner Bros.' eight movies and its associated merch,” shares Sam Hargrave on The Direct. With the controversies arising among fans, it is easy to forget that the people involved in the actual show face concerns as well. On the news site Yahoo, Jeff Moss claims, “The challenge is keeping the young cast moving at the right pace. HBO boss Casey Bloys acknowledged that ‘the kids are growing’ and said the goal is to avoid a huge gap between seasons, although the scale of the production makes annual releases unrealistic.” This problem is one of many that the director and producers have to keep in mind, given that filming schedules can't pause the natural aging process of young actors. Thankfully, Bloys is trying to keep this schedule on track so the show won't lose the youthful energy Harry Potter displays in his first year of wizarding education. Overall, HBO’s latest project has certainly sparked controversy and left viewers split between excitement and caution. Whether or not the series actually delivers on fans’ expectations remains to be seen, but in the meantime, all we can do is have faith that HBO succeeds in creating something truly magical.
