Emotional storytelling and reflective lyrics have long been a defining part of Mitski’s music. With the release of her newest album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, listeners are once again drawn into the artist’s deeply personal writing and distinctive sound.
For Lily Weaver, a freshman, the album left a strong impression. Weaver was already somewhat familiar with Mitski’s music before listening to the project, saying, “I have listened to Mitski before her new album dropped!” Having heard some of Mitski’s popular songs before, the album gave her the opportunity to experience more of the artist’s work in a full project. Her initial reaction to the album was reflective. Rather than something meant to play casually in the background, the music encouraged deeper thought and attention. “I’m not exactly sure how to word this, but it kinda made me reflect on things,” Lily explained, describing how the songs prompted her to think more carefully about their meaning. Weaver described the album as “relatable, very descriptive, and overall very appealing to listen to.” The writing style stood out to her, particularly the way Mitski’s lyrics communicate emotions that listeners may not always expect to connect with. The song that stood out most was “If I Change.” Although the track can often be interpreted through the lens of relationships, Weaver connected with it in a different way. “Not really in a relationship way, but I do feel like I had to change myself for the liking of other people,” she said. That personal connection made the song particularly memorable during the listening experience. The emotional weight of the album was another element that stood out. According to Lily, the music carries a tone that encourages listeners to pause and reflect. “The album really made me feel kinda heavy-hearted. It’s the kind of album that you have to stop whatever you’re doing and get really into your thoughts.” Although she has not explored every song in Mitski’s discography, Lily still noticed how unique the artist’s style can be from track to track. As she described it, “I feel like with Mitski, all her songs sound pretty unique from one another.” Overall, Lily gave the album a 9 out of 10 rating and strongly recommended it to others. “The album had great ways of describing things that I never really thought I could relate to,” she shared. While some songs were occasionally harder to interpret, the themes remained impactful. “The themes really stuck out to me. I got a lot of 'hard to love' feelings from this.” After listening to the album, Lily noted that the experience made her even more interested in Mitski’s music moving forward. As she put it, “She really stands out... so well the listener really gets a feel.” In the end, Lily’s reaction highlights the emotional depth that continues to draw listeners to Mitski’s music. With its reflective themes and vivid storytelling, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me leaves a lasting impression—one that encourages listeners to slow down, think, and connect with the feelings behind the songs.
