Horrifying and Hyped: WGHS Student Reacts to DC’s “CLAYFACE”

A popular, fan-favorite villain from the streets of Gotham City comes to the big screen on October 23, 2026, following a teaser trailer posted by DC on April 22. DC’s CLAYFACE, set to be the studio’s first take on body horror, has been received relatively well by audiences, including students like myself here at WGHS.

Every DC fan knows the lineup of inmates incarcerated in Arkham Asylum: the Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and so many more. However, one villain almost always seems to be overlooked: Clayface. A monstrous man, he can morph his body into anything using his clay-like mass. CLAYFACE marks the first time that DC has truly delved into the horror genre following the release of 2022’s The Batman, which signaled a shift toward a darker cinematic style.

Judging by the trailer, CLAYFACE is set to be a body horror film—a subgenre featuring grotesque physical disfiguration as its main appeal. As a fan of the genre myself, particularly James Wan’s Saw franchise, and having heard of Tom Six’s Human Centipede trilogy, body horror is something that both intrigues and disgusts me in the best way possible. The lengths to which some filmmakers go for their craft are insane to me, and this film appears to be no exception. The concept of Clayface as a villain has always fascinated me, even if I’ve rarely seen him depicted as more than a one-dimensional character. This movie seems to delve into an extensive backstory, and I’m certainly excited to see what they have in store for him.

That being said, I do have my reservations. For starters, DC Studios has historically been more successful with comic books and games than with films when compared to Marvel, one of its main competitors. (For context, 2017's Justice League earned nearly $200 million less than Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, which was released around the same time.) I admit I am biased toward Batman, but even then, I wasn’t a huge fan of The Batman and its decision to omit the Joker as the main antagonist in favor of the Riddler.

In conclusion, while I have a small hint of doubt in the back of my mind, I am excited to see what DC has to offer as CLAYFACE dives into the horror genre. I certainly hope this film can mold itself into a cinematic masterpiece.
