SENIOR SKIPDAY: A Fun Tradition or An Unnecessary Risk?

Students and teachers at WGHS were asked whether senior skip day is truly a harmless tradition or a decision that can negatively impact students.

For many seniors, skip day feels like a chance to relax and spend time with friends before everything ends. One anonymous student described it as “a chance to relax and spend time together before everything ends,” showing how meaningful it can feel emotionally. Another student shared that it’s “one of the last opportunities to make memories with classmates.” It’s easy to see why so many students look forward to it, even if it’s not officially allowed.

However, not everyone sees it that way. A WGHS teacher pointed out that skipping school, no matter the reason, “still goes against attendance expectations and can lead to consequences students may not fully consider.” She also mentioned that it can be stressful on the teacher's side, especially when many seniors are absent at once. With so many students missing, she explained that it creates extra work and can lead to teachers having to spend additional time outside of school hours entering grades and catching students up.

From this point of view, senior skip day isn’t just about having fun; it also affects others. Missing school this close to graduation can mean missing important lessons, assignments, or final instructions that actually matter.

Even some students recognize the downsides. Another anonymous student admitted that while the day is fun, “you can miss assignments or fall behind,” which shows that the risks are real, even if people try to ignore them. There’s also the issue of the example it sets. Underclassmen see seniors skipping and might start to think it’s okay, even though it goes against school rules.

At the same time, the teacher acknowledged that students who are usually consistent may feel like they need a break, showing that she understands both sides. Still, she emphasized that there are better ways to handle that need without skipping school. Instead of skipping, some believe there are better ways to celebrate. Another teacher explained, “There are more positive ways for seniors to celebrate that don’t involve breaking school rules.” School events or planned activities can still give seniors a chance to be together without the risk.
