In the past, gymnastics was a big part of Kya’s life, but later on, she made a switch during her freshman year when she tried out for cheer. Her sophomore year was her first time cheering, she was on Varsity comp, JV Football Sidelines, and JV Basketball. In her Junior year, she decided to try out and she made the varsity comp team. This year (her senior year) she is on the varsity football sideline, game day cheer, and varsity comp.

Aside from cheer, Kya is very active in the WGHS chorus. In her freshman year, she was put into chorus, “I didn’t wanna take it at first. But I was put in it again for my second semester, so I was like “Okay, I’ll give it a try.” Ever since, she has been involved in chorus, she started taking Advanced Chorus her sophomore year and has never looked back.

Even though she has so many responsibilities, Kya has been able to find a balance between school work and cheerleading, she comments about how she copes, “With everything, it has been super busy, and stuff, but I just try to manage things. I’d go home, I’d do homework, and if I’m at school, I’ll try to do it. But yeah, being on three teams is really a lot, but I really like doing it, and I’ve kind of had the philosophy that you only do high school once.” Recently, Kya injured her shoulder, and she was really bummed that she had to sit out. But during this difficult time, she took the opportunity to support her team, “Every comp, I have made sure that I was the loudest one there, making sure I’m saying my counts for my teammates...” She was finally cleared again a few days ago to cheer.

Kya thinks that cheer is a way to make great connections, but it also takes most of your time, “You make a lot of friends through cheer, like, really close bonds with people. I would say one of the only cons is, if you do varsity comp, it takes a lot of time so don’t try out for something that you’re not going to have time to do.”

All in all, Kya is an ambitious student who is all round and involved. She is very supportive of her teammates and has a great personality. She has been able to balance her school work and extracurricular activities, and she has overcome so much.
