Over the past week here at WGHS, there was a faculty Sprint race held by Coach Carrafa. There were a lot of teachers racing, and the winners were Coach Bennett and Dr. Jones.
by Tristan Banks and Addison Butler
Coach Carrafa
Coach Carrafa coaches girls track and field as well as football. He helped create the faculty sprint race with the idea of Dr. Wheeler. He stated he wanted to create something like this “to build a camaraderie between faculty and just to compete because I always love to compete.” He was hoping that the staff would have a great time doing the race, he mentioned, “It was just something fun to do right before the break... Dr. Wheeler actually gave me the idea.” Coach Carrafa actually thought it was a good idea and he wants to continue the race in the future years, he mentions, “Absolutely, this was the first annual we are going back to back. ” He was correct on who he thought would win the race and Coach Carrafa said, “I was correct on both of them. Everyone that I predicted would make the finals made the finals, except for Dr. Holder, she was my last resort and almost did it. She was my dark horse.”
Dr. Jones
Dr. Jones is a Social Studies teacher here at WGHS, and he came in first place doing the faculty sprint racing. He thought the competition was pretty fun, “I think that we are all old and some of us got hurt, and I'm also glad I didn't get hurt.” He also mentioned, “It showed us that we are all old and need to work out to maintain a level of healthiness or we are going to get hurt.” The main idea of this race was a way to have fun before going on spring break, so that the staff didn't have as much to worry about. Dr. Jones felt great about winning: “I did. I originally thought my only competition was [Coach] Tait because he was in the finals and was a very good competitor. But overall I thought I was going to win because I'm the fastest man... I did it for my third block and they cheered me on and made me believe I could be a champion.” Dr. Jones was really confident in himself, and he wasn't nervous about anything except for Coach Tait.
Coach Bennett
Coach Bennett is the basketball coach and teacher here at Walnut Grove that has also won in the faculty sprint racing competition. She thought the competition was a good mix of fun and competitiveness. She says, “It was super fun. I thought all the times were similar so it was good competition.” She also mentions, “I think everyone had a good time, especially because we didn't know what was going on when we started, and it was a fun way to lead up to spring break.” Coach Bennet believes the competition served its purpose of bringing a competitive game for the staff to enjoy. She says, “Yeah I think it would be fun to do again and it's a really good way to bring people together and it also makes people laugh.” Coach Bennet wanted to win even with the strong competition. She says, “I was hopeful that I would win.” She also mentioned, “It was super competitive. I really didn't know what was going to happen, and we were all very close in our times.” Coach was happy with the competition and said, “It was fun. The trophy is great, I got a big trophy I got to carry around and tell my kids I won.” As a result congratulations to Coach Bennet and Dr. Jones on being crowned Champs in the faculty Spirit Madness!
