by Justin Andrio, Makayla Bryson, and Lucas Bell
Madison County
The Walnut Grove Tennis team travels to Madison county High School for their second region match of the season. The Tennis team has been preparing for these region matchups since the start of the season and they continue to get better as a team. The team worked on their consistency and it worked to their advantage helping them beat out the tuff Cedar Shoals team in a close region matchup Karen Robertson stated, “Try and stay consistent with my backhand and get that first serve in the box.” “The strategy I'm working on is playing against my opponent, making her go cross court and then just putting the ball away.” For the girls it was not a good day for them. They didn't win a single match alongside JV girls; still, they played their best. The boys played their best with varsity singles 1 Matthew Bovenkerk battling with Madison County’s Varsity Singles one in three sets Matthew had won the first set 6-2 in a fairly easy set, but then Madison counties 1 singles player fought back winning the next set 6-2 to take it to a third set and finally Matthew played his best in this final set winning it 6-4 taking the match. The next matchup was Justin Andrio playing Singles 2 against Madison County’s Single 2. Justin came out playing hard but lost the first set 6-1. Coming into the second set Justin cleared his mind, had a winners mentality, and fought to win this set 6-2. With the game on the line in this set Justin fought for yet another set seeing that his opponent was getting tired and frustrated with himself, He turned the game around and won the final set by a score of 6-2.
North Oconee
North Oconee has been dominating the region for about a decade now, But Walnut Grove plans to end that on Thursday. This is another region matchup of two rivals, North Oconee has beaten Walnut Grove in every sport they have played this year but it's time to get revenge. Matthew Bovenkerk and Ava Grace Pittman shared the type of strategy they are going to use against North Oconee. Ava said, "Just have a clean mindset, and give it my all even if I think I'm gonna lose even if there's a really good team or it's a good player and just get out there and do what I'm supposed to do." Matthew Bovenkerk said, "Try to stay consistent and not make any mistakes, go out for the win, try to have good serve as well and keep moving." The boys and girls played some hard fought matches but the outcome is not what we wanted. They lost all their matches. The Tennis Team is looking promising this year. Come see them next week on 3/11/25 for their next region matchup against Eastside High school. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
