The season officially begins on October 21st and wrestlers are already getting work in to be conditioned and prepared for the first meet. Preparation Mason Thigpen (12) has been getting equipped for his last high school wrestling season. He said he has “been staying in the gym and putting on muscle. I’m going up in weight class, so I'm going to need more strength if I'm going to stand a chance.” Grant Allen, (11), noted that he has been “practicing with the team in preseason and hitting the gym.” The same can be said for Noah Van Name. Goals Mason is determined to make it past the regional tournament. He says, “I’ve gone 0-2 the last two years and this is my last chance to do it.” He is resilient and hopes to make it far in his last year. Noah and Grant both want to keep a strong record and ultimately place in state. They have both been competing since freshman year, and their progress has been exceptional. Long-term Goals When asked about long-term goals Mason explained, “I want to get an athletic scholarship to Life University. They have a D1 program, and it’d be fun to wrestle in college there.” Even though his high school wrestling journey is ending, he hopes to pursue a longer career in wrestling. Grant said, “I’ll wrestle through high school, but I don’t have any plans to do it in college.” Noah also has no plans of pursuing professional wrestling after high school. Challenges Wrestling is a very physically demanding sport, and there are many challenges along the way. Noah spoke on some challenges he has encountered. “Just being tired. Wrestling is exhausting, and it’s so easy to just give up during the middle [of a match] and not try.” Grant has had a very similar experience. “The conditioning can be tough and can sometimes really push my limits but in the end it’s better for me.” Wrestling requires multiple hours of practice to get all the moves in your “bag”. Mason thinks a big challenge for him is being mentally in the zone. “The biggest challenge is just having the mental toughness to continue. Every day you get beat up and thrown around, but you have to stay focused on the end goal.” Having this attitude is crucial in being able to get up and keep pushing yourself to be your best. Walnut Grove wrestlers seem prepared and anticipating the upcoming season. The first meet for varsity, JV, and girls is on November 15th at home. Go Warriors!
