They ended up placing second at the meet, which was held at Harlem High School and featured six other schools.
Maverick Verdin (10th), one of the wrestlers part of the Walnut Grove team, was asked how well he thought the meet went overall. He replied with, “I think we have a lot to work on as a team, and we showed that when we went against South Effingham and came up short.” However, he believes the team could improve on techniques such as “top and bottom.” Maverick also thinks he did really well at the meet but could still improve on his technique. When asked how he felt about the team coming in second, he stated, “I think we should have won, but we have stuff to work on.” Matthew Adams (11th), one of the main wrestlers, was also asked how he thought the meet went overall, and he stated, “I think I did pretty well. I got two tech falls and three pins and got first place in my bracket. It wasn't really much of a competition for me—pretty solid meet.” Then we asked how he thought the team did overall, and he said, “I think we did pretty well up till the finals against South Effingham. There were some flaws we could have worked on, but overall, I think we did pretty decently to place 2nd against South Effingham because they are a pretty solid team.” Then, when asked how the team could have improved, he said, “Be more mentally prepared. Some people kind of gave up in their matches. Coach wasn't really happy with that, but that's just something we have to work on.” When asked how he could have improved, he stated that he thought he did “decent. Even though I did win all my matches, I feel like my pace was a little slow, and I could have had a faster pace.” Finally, when we asked him how he thought about winning 2nd place, he stated, “I wasn't really too pleased with it, but as a team I still think we did well overall.” The Warrior wrestling team will wrestle again on December 5th, 2025, at home. If you can’t make it, be sure to tune in to the Call of the Warriors broadcast, with a special guest from Head Coach Paul Vanstone’s son! The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
