Walnut Grove Wore First Day Fits — And They Were DIFFERENT

This semester started the year off strong with expressive and unique outfits worn by the students of WGHS on the first day.

​From casual to colorful, and from skirts to knit cardigans, WGHS has a broad sense of fashion. Syriah Griffin, a rising senior, started her year off fashionably with a TikTok-inspired outfit. For the first day of school, Syriah wore a patterned shirt with shorts. She was inspired by recent social media trends, saying, “They be putting it on.” She expressed that her style wasn’t limited to era alone and that she got a lot of her clothing from PacSun, with the total outfit cost coming to an average of $50. She said that her inspiration for her first-day outfit was, “You just gotta be different this year; it’s our last year.”

It wasn’t only students who felt an itch for first-day fashion. Retired-student-turned-drama-teacher Ms. Gibson expressed herself in vivid coloration. She wore a tank top, a knit cardigan, and most importantly, a colorful skirt, which she claimed “was the way to go.” Ms. Gibson used interesting descriptors for her style such as “Hippie Dippie,” which is based on '70s to '80s fashion norms. She said that “[she] felt very teacher-coded.”

Adrianna Muller, a ninth grader, described her first-day outfit as a Y2K-era style outfit with a black shirt, a studded belt, and light-washed jeans. She stated that she thrifts a lot and gets many of her outfits from Plato's Closet and Goodwill, with this specific outfit costing $50.

One of our beloved drama students, Serenity Martin, a ninth-grade freshman, also had a few statements to make about fashion. For the first day of school, Serenity wore a casual striped top alongside bell-bottom jeans. Serenity clarified there was no inspiration behind her outfits: “I was shopping and was like, 'Yo, this was tuff.'” Serenity’s outfit total came to around $36, making her outfit the second-least expensive out of all the samples.

The median price for outfits came to around $50. Lillie Bedingfield had the most expensive outfit from the sample. Lillie’s first-day outfit included some Jordans, a skirt, and a T-shirt. She noted that she was inspired by her boyfriend’s car, donning a Honda sports car shirt. Her style was based on the '90s to 2000s era, and this era was a basis for a lot of the students. She also stated that her favorite clothing store to shop from was Zumiez, a choice many other students agreed with.

Walnut Grove’s first day back was filled with different styles and fun outfits from both faculty and students—showing how fashion can bring many diverse groups of people together.
