On August 31, Walnut Grove varsity softball took the win against Eastside High School with a score of 6-5. The Varsity Softball team has had a great start to the season, and this game against Eastside continues to make the season even better. The team talks about how they won and what they faced during the match.
Gracie Starrett (senior) is the pitcher for the Walnut Grove team; pitching is a big part of the game. So, how she plays can have a huge influence on the game. She said on how they won the game, "We just tried to hit the ball the best we can." Gracie also said that the team was constantly motivating each other to play better: "Everybody's staying up with each other. Nobody was like being negative about anything." Even though they won, Gracie said there were also challenges they faced throughout the game: "At the beginning of the game, we kind of were in a slump with hitting, and then we finally found it." She said that during the game, to overcome the challenges, "We just made adjustments to, like, how we were hitting the ball; we did a lot better at the end than we did in the beginning." Their preparation for the game was also a little different: "Usually we go before games, but this time we stayed and we kind of just talked about what we were going to do before." Jayden Helms (sophomore) agreed with Gracie on most qualities. She agreed with Gracie, saying, "We just made sure that we were talking around on the field." While the team is continuously being motivated by coaches, parents, and other personal things, Jayden believes the team's biggest motivator is each other: "We all just figured out how to work together." With the win came challenges too. Jayden said, "We have like challenges with pitching, mouth walks, and getting hits as a team together." Jayden said the way the team overcame those challenges, they talked about it as a team, helping each other figure out what to do better. You can see that these players have determination to their team. Walnut Grove has now gone 7-5 in their win-to-loss ratio.
