Following the release of Malcolm Todd’s new single, “Breathe,” on March 13, 2026, fans from WGHS shared what they thought of the song and gave their opinions on how this single compares to his past music.
For many students, Malcolm Todd isn’t just another artist on a playlist; he is an important figure within the realm of indie music. Known for his unique style of vocals and soft rhythms, his latest release goes to show how talented he is as a rising indie star. WGHS students shared their thoughts on how his newest single lived up to his debut. For Elija Flores (12), the new direction of Malcolm’s music didn’t immediately click. “It was good—but I liked it less than his other songs because of the beat. I wasn’t feeling it,” Elija said. However, he added that Malcolm’s signature style was still there: “The uniqueness of his music is just radiating.” David Alexander (10) had a similar opinion. He felt that the track didn’t outshine Malcolm’s earlier songs. David had been introduced to Todd’s music through the hit “Chest Pain,” and he found the new flow in the latest single to be different. “I think it’s really great—it’s worse than some of his others,” David noted. Despite his critique of the new beat, he remains a fan of the vocals. “I just like the way his voice sounds in this song—it really shows his growth in his music career.” Montana Mckenzie (12) was more moved by the lyrical and emotional parts of the song. Montana described it as deeply personal. “I thought that it was very powerful and the words spoke to me.” She believed it to be the perfect track following his debut album. “This song was the cherry on top of his debut album.” Dakota Johnson (10) gave similar feedback, stating that the song “speaks to the soul.” She thinks that because the song is so new, it hasn't had time to really "hit" for the fans. “I like it less than his other music because it’s newer and hasn’t really settled yet,” she said. However, she explained how the tone and the lyrics stood out the most to her: “This song proves that he’s his own person and it shows his confidence.” Whether it's the unique rhythms and styles of the beat or the deep lyrics that speak to the soul, Malcolm Todd proves to be an artist who is not afraid to evolve. With many fans agreeing that they would definitely be active listeners of Malcolm Todd in the future, it’s safe to say that this indie artist’s latest release is another hit for students at WGHS.
