At the mid-season point, the WGHS varsity volleyball team fights to get past a .500 record in the second half of the season.
Coach Larimer, the girls' varsity volleyball coach, explains that the girls were able to learn mobility recovery and focus on where they should be. “We improved our overall hitting once we figured out what positions the girls should be hitting in, and then we were able to focus a little bit more on what they needed.” Due to practicing up until now, the volleyball team has excelled at their advancements. She believes the girls are already doing everything well, and they should continue their core movement skills. Coach Larimer states, “...they do a great job. They just keep doing what they're doing.” Juliana Cullota (Fr), who is an outside hitter and right-side hitter, explains how Coach Larimer has helped her build body stability. Training has helped her bounce back quickly. Juliana mentions, “Yeah, like my body feels really good. I don't really need much time to recover.” Volleyball hasn't taken much of a toll on her body, and it's helped keep her in shape more than it's pained her. Juliana also mentions how uplifting her team is, even in hard times. “I think we do really well with holding each other accountable in a good way because we just all understand that everybody makes mistakes, and we don't push each other to be the best player out there; we just understand each other when we make mistakes.” The WGHS girls' volleyball team is positive, understanding, and encouraging. Payton West (So), who is a defensive specialist, mentions that her body becomes sore due to the hard work she performs during games. She explains she eases her body by doing simpler practices the next day. Payton shares, “When we play two games on one of the days, it definitely feels like we're sore, and everyone is. But during practice, if we played really hard the day before, we'll kind of do an easier practice so we can all get better.” Payton states that communication is a big part of their team. The team's communication comes easily to them due to their friendships. She says, “I think we're all good at communicating because we're also good friends off the court, so that makes it easier to get through things on the court.” Kaylee Hyde (Sr) talks about how she feels and how she recovers after games. “My body is feeling a lot better right now. I think usually recovery time can take about a day to just recover and get everything stretched and prepared for the next game." The team holds each other accountable. Being on a team takes a lot of ownership. Kaylee mentions, “We hold each other accountable by talking, after our games, about what the team needs to improve on individually and what it needs to improve on as a team.” The WGHS volleyball team players are very clear and confident communicators. “I think that we communicate pretty well. There's always room to improve, but overall our communication is good, and when we're going against hard teams, it's amazing.” The team can articulate ideas freely, with their thoughts being taken into consideration. The WGHS volleyball team is officially halfway through the season. With the help of staff, students, and clubs, let's help them finish their season like Warriors!
