On March 5th, 2024, the Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer teams played Clarke County in Athens, Ga. Unfortunately, both teams fell: the Boys 4-1 and the Girls 3-1.
Boys' Game The Boys lost 4-1 and their record is now 4-4 on the year. Chris Myers is a senior on the team, and he plays right back. He says, “We had good moments, but I think a couple bad moments held us back... We’ve gotta be serious, focus, and stay positive.” After this game, their weakness looks to be away games. They are 1-4 in games not played at Warrior Stadium and look to have advantage on their home turf. (picture by Cameron Parker)
Girls' Game
The Girls also lost this game, but still look promising on the year. They sit at 6-2 and 5-0 in region play, which is 2nd in 4A Region 8. They were on a four game win streak, with notable wins over Chestatee, 7-0, and East Hall, 10-0. Gwyneth Banks is the Goalkeeper for the Girls’ Varsity team. She comments on what held the girls back during this particular game, “I guess we weren’t as excited... I think everybody was just a little tired, so we weren’t as pumped up as we normally are and ready to play, like how we are on the field we’re screaming and yelling and excited and all that, but we didn’t have that spirit that we normally did.” Playing "goal" is an extremely hard position in soccer. The hardest things for Gwyneth are “two things, just getting scored on in general and feeling like you’ve let the team down even though sometimes, like, there was a goal last night that I couldn’t do anything about. It really sucks because we don’t control every shot that people take, we can’t stop every shot, and so it just feels like a letdown almost. She continued, "The other one [thing] would be just getting hurt. Because in soccer, especially in goalkeeping, there’s not a lot of people who play it. We’re thankful that we have a backup just in case I get hurt again. It’s just playing through the pain because I got hurt last night and had to play through it, and it made me struggle a lot more [at] the end of the game.” On the bright side for both teams, Clarke Central’s teams are tough games this season, especially at their stadium. The CC's boys record is 9-0-1, with the only tie being against Cedar Shoals, and the Girls record is 5-4-2. The Warriors shouldn’t give up hope. Both teams play Flowery Branch on Friday March 8th, the Boys at 7:30 PM and the Girls at 5:30 PM. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
