On July 24th, 2022, the XFL announced its return, for the second time. Former WWE1 Wrestler and current actor, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Dany Garcia bought the team for $15 million, after the league declared bankruptcy in April of 2020, shutting the league down the league, once again.
The XFL is notorious for its failure. In February of 2001, the XFL was officially announced as a brand new football league to be played when the NFL2 is in the offseason, similar to the USFL3. The league would contain players who either could not make it in the NFL, free agents who could not get signed in the NFL, or college players who did not get drafted or signed. ![]()
However, compared to the NFL, the XFL has different rules. One of the rules being there are NO kicked extra points. Instead, a team will go for different point values from different yards. A team can go for a one-point conversion from the two-yard line, a two-point conversion from the five yard line, and a three point conversion from the ten-yard line.
Johnson revealed why he purchased the league in 2020, saying, "I got involved with the XFL and became an XFL owner with Dany to help players' dreams come true ... and to grow the game of football." Today, the XFL is currently sitting high. At the end of the season, the XFL is expected to generate $7.6 million in ticket sales alone, not including at-home viewers (via BOLAVIP). ![]()
Compared to the NFL, players are paid criminally low. The average NFL player’s salary is $860,000. The average XFL player’s salary is roughly $60,000 - a $800,000 gap between the two leagues.
Today, many famous Former NFL players are playing in the XFL, one of the main players being Former All-Pro4 Wide Receiver, Josh “Flash” Gordon, who was suspended from the NFL in 2014, which would be the beginning of the end for Gordon’s NFL career. Gordon was suspended a total six times in his NFL career, making him miss four straight years after being denied reinstatement by the league. Due to his drug abuse, he was unable to get reinstated until 2017. Gordon was eventually reinstated on November 1st, 2017 (via Sporting News). (Photographed by Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports) After bouncing from team to team from 2018-2020, Gordon was, once again, suspended indefinitely for drug abuse in January 2021. Now, Gordon plays in the XFL alongside Former Dallas Cowboy and Fan Favorite Ben DiNucci, who started one game during the NFL’s Covid-19 season, in place of the injured Dak Prescott. The duo got their first win, three weeks into the season, giving the team a (1-2) record heading into Week 4. ![]()
The XFL championship game will be played on May 13th, which is also in the middle of the USFL’s regular season. So there should be no worry about not having football until the middle of summer, specifically June 9th, when the USFL will play its championship game.
