Baseball Doubleheader on 2/17 The Walnut Grove High School Varsity baseball team played a doubleheader on Saturday against Kennesaw Mountain and Sequoyah. They won their first game against Kennesaw 12-11, but sadly couldn’t pull through against Sequoyah with a loss of 6-9. Luckily, this leaves the boy’s win-loss ratio at 3-1. Alec Clayton, starting third baseman, says that the one thing that led to the boy's loss against Sequoyah was defense. However, even then it can still be shown through the score that these warriors were putting up a fight. Even against Kennesaw Mountain, the close score hints at how well the baseball team must’ve played all together. Alec says, "For me, I think I did pretty good and I think I played great defense too," when asked about his personal highlights during both games. With games as close as these, it might be a little nerve-wracking to the coaches and fans, but without a doubt. The Warriors Baseball team has clearly shown that they don’t plan on giving up anytime soon. ![]()
Varsity Basketball Season Recap
The Girls did well all season long. Finishing the season with a 17-9 record, the Girls started the season 4-5. They heated up and finished the regular season 15-7, and finished the region tournament at 17-8. They unfortunately lost a close game to Luella in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs, 51-56. The Season was rocky at the start, but they got hot when it mattered. Congratulations, Girls! The Boys started off the season with a six-game win streak, with big wins over Parkview and East Hall. Unfortunately, North Oconee ended their undefeated season and handed them a 9 point loss on North Oconee’s home court. At one point, the team had an 8-1 record and looked to be making a deep tourney run. Then, the team got sick. Players were missing games. And as soon as they knew it, the team sat at 10-10 with a six game losing streak. They snapped the streak with a win vs. LCA on January 20th, but ended the regular season with a three-game skid and a win vs. North Hall. They went 3-1 in the Region Tournament with the only loss vs. Seckinger. They played Pace Academy in the State Playoffs on the 21st, and unfortunately lost 69-52. It was an extreme height advantage for Pace Academy, having multiple players. over 6'5". Congratulations, Boys! When asked about the team's biggest adversity during this season, Johnathan Isaac (12) stated, “Just overcoming our losing streak and trying to figure out a way to get back to winning.” He has bright hopes for Freshman Chase Mohn. He says, “I feel like Chase Mohn... took the biggest leap because he’s a freshman starting on Varsity, so he had to mature a lot.” ![]()
Walnut Grove Soccer Defeats East Hall
The Walnut Grove Soccer teams played East Hall on Tuesday, February 20th. Girls Varsity thoroughly toasted East Hall in a 10-0 beatdown, improving to a 4-1 overall record and a sweet undefeated 3-0 in region play. Despite having one loss to Loganville HS, the team has outscored their opponents 21-9 through 5 games. Boys Varsity won 4-2, and handed East Hall their first loss of the season. With this win, the team improves to 2-1 in region play, and 3-2-1 on the year. The hard fought victory was led by Junior, Stefan Jackson. Jackson played well, scoring 3 out of the 4 goals for Walnut Grove. When asked about the game, Jackson stated, "It's just a region game, so we know we had to win it, but we have many other teams we have to beat, so we got one down…." Jackson also talked about the team moving forward, "It’s probably the best team this school has ever had, so we should be pretty good going forward, we definitely can go to the playoffs this year, and we are going to go for state if we can." Although the season has only just started, the Warrior teams already have a ton of confidence in themselves and are looking toward the final goal: State. Congratulations to all these teams on their wins and productive seasons. The Baseball and Soccer teams look to get better throughout the season and improve to hopefully play in State.
