The Walnut Grove Warriors varsity baseball team had their Senior Night on Apr 10, 2024.
by Ty Cameron and Arynn Clayton
Senior Night is a celebration for all the Seniors on the team. It recognizes all their hard work and achievements during their years. While it is a time for celebration and happiness, it can also be hard for the coaches, parents, and teammates that have been with the seniors for so long. This year, the Walnut Grove High School baseball team is losing 14 seniors, who have all contributed to the team in their own ways, which includes inspiring and guiding their younger teammates.
Landon Moore is a Senior on the WGHS baseball team and player number 21. His position on the team is shortstop. Landon talks about what he has added to the team, “Mostly just trying to run the bases the best I can, hitting good angles, getting on second base every time, just trying to score.” Landon has made some lasting memories while on the team as well, “Our Lakepoint trips. They’re always really fun. Summer ball is also a great time when you’re playing with everyone.” Even though he has had a fun time on the team, he does not wish to continue playing baseball after high school. When asked about his thoughts on their game against Cedar Shoals on April 9th, he responded, “It was a good win last night, we could have started out a little better, but we’re gonna get on it and fix it.”
Thomas Burke is also a Senior on the varsity team. He is player #13 and holds the positions of Pitcher and Right Fielder. Thomas has made many contributions to the team over the years including, “Being a good teammate and being a leader.” When asked what some of his favorite moments with the team were, he responded, “Winning against Cherokee Bluff and North Hall.” After high school, Thomas wishes to continue playing baseball. He wishes to play at Georgia Southern and thanks his teammates and coaches for inspiring him to this goal.
Cade Trinkle, Junior on the WGHS baseball team, has been on the team since eighth grade, and as the years have gone by, the seniors on the team have helped him in major ways. “I've connected with most of the seniors, including Thomas. All of them have helped me improve my confidence.” Confidence is key when it comes to a mentally tough sport such as baseball, so in a way, these seniors have shaped Cade’s future in baseball. Junior, Emerson Medlock, has been on the team for three years, and has bonded with all of his senior teammates pretty well. “They’ve helped improve my work ethic and my focus over the years. I really couldn’t have done it without them.” WGHS seniors have really made an impression on their younger counterparts as the years have gone by which is why as the team moves forward, they only get better and better. Walnut Grove is proud of all the Seniors. Whether or not they wish to play in college or the pros, we wish them all the best.
