With car detailing set as a long-term career, Thompson reflects on his journey in becoming a young entrepreneur. Q: When did you start your business? A year and a half ago, but I just started advertising [my business] more these past few months. Q: What inspired you to start this business? I love cars. I like working on cars, so I wanted a way to be around cars and make money while at the same time Q: What did the process look like? I started off with detailing my family and friends' cars… and [people] around the neighborhood. Then, I started advertising on Instagram, Facebook, and snapchat. Just go for it… you can't be scared. Q: Did you receive help? What help? My brothers, my mom and dad definitely helped me in a big way through it… with support and even getting my first equipment and chemical. I definitely thank them a lot for that. Q: Were you limited to do things because of your age? When I first started, people saw my age as a way to cut down my price and experience level. Q: How did you come up with a name for your car wash? It's a copyrighted name actually, my brother already has 2 different brands with that name and I decided to keep it going. Q: How do you use videos to market your business? What I’ve learned is that you need to get your audience to engage from the start, and if not then, they’re gone. So, you have to do something in the beginning of the video… that can be a song or a cool camera angle which is going to make people want to keep watching. Q: What did you focus on in the beginning and what are you focusing on now? In the beginning, I focused on doing the best job for lowest prices that I could, while doing the same job as other big detailers. That way customers have a reason to come to me. Now, I focus more on high end cars and perfecting my actual advertisement. Q: What does your customer base look like? Anywhere from 16 years old all the way up to fully retired people. Q: What motivates you now? Owning some of the cars that work on and having money to be able to build cars. Q: Do you see yourself doing this long-term? Yes, I do see myself doing this long term even if it isn't detailing… it will be something along the lines of it. Q: Why do you like what you do? Where did this passion come from? When I was younger, we used to go to race tracks and race events and I just always liked cars and wanted to be around them as much as I could. Q:What does your schedule look like with school? It's pretty hard with school. Because It gets dark earlier, it's hard when I get home at 3:30 to try to get a couple cars in, when it takes about an hour and a half or so to do 1 car. So, by the time I get home, change, and get water into the tank, it's usually about 4…and then I only have time for about 1 or 2 cars. Q: What can you tell WGHS warriors if they want to start a business, what advice would you give? Just go for it… you can't be scared. I've had a couple businesses that didn’t exactly go well with pressure washing, but you can't be scared to fail… you just have to go for it. You might mess up a couple times, lose some money, but you're going to make it back eventually if you keep working. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
