On January 31st, the Walnut Grove Warriors held Senior Night at WGHS. The graduating players were Cassius Hann (PG, SG ~ 5’10” ~ 140 lbs. ~ #2), JT Thomas (SG, PG ~ 5’10” ~ 150 lbs. ~ #4), Nick Tyre (PG, SG, SF ~ 6’1” ~ 190 lbs. ~ #10), Alex Cannon (PF, C ~ 6’10” ~ #12), Zach Moser (PG, SG ~ 5’11” ~ #23), and Dom Hyatt (PF ~ 6’6” ~ 230 lbs. ~ #33) (MaxPrep Sports). The Varsity Warriors unfortunately lost, 50-41, to Madison County (Danielsville, GA).
After a slow first half, the Warriors picked it up in the second half, out scoring Madison County 26-24. Unfortunately, the slow start held them back, heading into halftime down 26-15. Senior Alex Cannon anchored the defense, gathering six of the team’s seven blocks, and two of the team’s 5 steals in the loss. The seniors helped lead Walnut Grove to a 4-2 record at home, a 4-4 record away, and a 3-6 neutral site record. Throughout the season, the Warriors have kept it close and had many defensive battles, including the loss vs. Madison County. Accompanied by the blocks, the Warriors held Madison County to 37% from the field, and 39% from 3-PT range.

Walnut Grove Warrior and Varsity starter, Sophomore Kayden Miller, talked about the team’s performance. “I feel as though we played well this year. You know, it’s been a hard schedule, but I feel as though we’re starting to turn the corner around. So that we can get back on track and lose no more games this season,” he explained. He then went on to talk about his personal performance. “I feel I did good this game. I [did have] a hip injury; my hip was hurting that game,” opened up Miller. “I’d like to improve my shooting, awareness, and dribbling.” The Warriors traveled to Seckinger (Buford, GA) on Friday, February 3rd. The senior Warriors also played their final regular season game on Tuesday, February 7th in Gainesville against North Hall. Coach Witherspoon (seen right, photographed by Brett Fowler Photography) has been coaching at Walnut Grove for four years with the 22-23 season being his fourth year. Meaning, he has coached these seniors since they were freshman. The Boys Varsity team will look to get a spot in the state playoffs soon to compete for a State Championship and hopefully bring it back to WGHS.
