On November 2nd, the Beatles released their said last song to ever be recorded. This can be heartbreaking to some who have been fans of The Beatles for quite awhile. The song is called “Now and Then”, and it’s an original song written and kept on a tape by John Lennon in 1970.  It was never released but now has been remastered and let out for the public’s ears. The song is slow and has a slight feeling of nostalgia that makes you reminisce about your past. I talked to Walnut Grove art teacher, Ms. Jackson, for her opinion on the new song. I particularly picked Ms. Jackson because I am familiar with her love for 60s-70s discography.  

First, she thinks, “I love the Beatles and have been a fan since I first heard them in the 70s!" This response was not surprising due to the soft, calming rock she plays while we quietly work in class.

Ms. Jackson is a very passionate and well-spoken person, so when asked about the connection she had to this new song, she stated, "I was surprised to hear a new song was being released. Shocked really. I had no idea and was anxious to hear it. Instead of listening, I played the video. The video showing the past and present intermingled was emotional, actually. It took me back and renewed my awe.” After reading her response, I understood the meaning of the song a lot more. It brought me back, as if I were listening to them at their peak. Although this song is supposed to be a goodbye song to the band and a tribute to Paul McCartney, Ms. Jackson believes the song was “a hello to a new generation.” And that the video did an amazing job “intermixing vintage material with current”.

This song has made an emotional and spiritual impact on Ms. Jackson and certainly others around the world. She expresses how it took her back, which is an amazing feeling anyone can experience but is extra special because of the past she has had with the band, almost growing up with them. The video has been described as powerful by some and should be one of their most popular. It seems the Beatles have made a significant impact on their generation and even the up-and-coming generations. With this song being their last, maybe a new band will come and take over the world just like the Beatles did.
