Eniya Hill, a senior thrower, explains how she got into throwing, speaks about her future with throwing, and sends a message to all aspiring throwers who may want to participate in this sport in the future.
She first got into throwing way back in 7th grade, around 6 years ago. She stated, “I really didn’t want to be a thrower at first. I just did it in middle school because one of my friends was doing it, then I got into it and started to like it.” Her friend, Endia Phillips, initially got her into throwing. After starting, she encountered one major obstacle, “In middle school we only had one coach, so he was coaching the runners. It was hard for the throwers to get coached, so I really didn’t learn to throw until I got to high school.” Eniya is currently trying to beat the school record of 111 feet. She talked about how she would get there, “I have been working on my spin because I usually throw out of power. I'm just trying to get that right so I can get more power behind my throw and get that 100 [feet]. There’s a lot of footwork and pivoting. It's not something that can happen overnight. We face challenges every day. A throw is never going to be perfect.” She thanks Coach Carrafa whom she calls “Jear Bear” to keep her going and stated, “He gets on my nerves, but at the end of the day when I see him at practice and the meets, he pushes me to do better. And I appreciate him because I know he wants me to be great.” Out of all the track and field events she thinks throwing is the most underrated, even though they score the majority of the points for the entire team, and get more appreciation and spotlight. Eniya will attend GGC after graduation, but is also on the fence about considering transferring colleges to continue throwing after high school. She sends a message to all aspiring throwers, stating, “You have to be patient, it's just not going to happen so fast- it takes a lot of time. I've been doing it for a long time, and I still haven’t got everything right. Just be patient and have that pivot. Never give up.” The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
