Fortnite Release: ATLA Element-Bending

On April 12th, 2024, Fortnite updated its current season, Myths and Mortals, by adding skins and items from Avatar: The Last Airbender.​

Season Recap    

Fortnite: Myths and Mortals brought a Greek theme to the game. Four new locations were added, The Underworld, Mount Olympus, Grim Gate, and Brawler’s Battlegrounds. The new season also brought three new items, two ‘epic’ rarity items, and one ‘mythic’ rarity item. These new items are The Chains of Hades, Wings of Icarus, and Thunderbolt of Zeus. The season also includes a new battlepass full of Greek gods.

The previous season featured vaults that would give a ton of loot for players as well as a boss that would drop a medallion. The medallions gave a shield recharge effect that would recharge the player's shield to fifty shield points. The downside to these medallions is that the player would be revealed on the map by a circle covering a wide radius. A player could get more than one medallion to max out a shield recharge to one hundred shield points, but lessening the circle's radius reveals. Other players could easily pinpoint the player's position and send them back to the lobby. 

Now these vaults are pre-opened and have been stripped clean of resources other than a few bars of gold. The medallions have been replaced by Aspects of the Gods, which work nearly the same as the medallions except that you are given a unique power rather than a shield recharge. However, you are still revealed on the map.

WGHS Junior, Jada Bailey, commented on the removal of the vaults by saying, “I am very upset about them removing the vaults. The vaults gave me so much gold and were fun to go to. I liked fighting the bosses and getting my shield recharged. The new bosses are cool and all, but now I can’t get as much gold.” A vault adjacent is in the game in the form of bunkers that give less gold but higher rarity items. 

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Alongside the release of the new season, Fortnite released its first event of the season. The new event brought characters from the popular show, Avatar, into the game as well as the elemental abilities seen in the show. Junior, Suzy McClung, said, “The Avatar stuff is so much fun. My favorite is Airbending. I love zooming around on the air wheel. Waterbending is a close second though.” 

With the new elemental bending, Fortnite temporarily disabled the newly added Greek items: Chain of Hades, Wings of Icarus, and Thunderbolt of Zeus. “I think the removal of the Chains of Hades and Thunderbolt of Zeus was a good decision although the Wings of Icarus need to come back,” said junior Hanson Juergens. 

This season has been subject to negative reviews from many players who say it fails in comparison to the other seasons. Junior, Cameron Selman, complained, “I want the OG season back; the OG season has been the best season for a while. This battlepass sucks and I don’t want to pay an extra $10 for the Avatar stuff.”

Upcoming
The Avatar event will end some time in May, and then the Star Wars event will begin. The Star Wars event should be the last event before the change of the season. The entire season has been hinting at a war with Olympus, so hopefully the season will close with an epic Greek battle bringing us into the next season.
