On February 29, Charlize Smith won the dramatic interpretation award at The GHSA Regional Literary Competition in Bogart, GA.
Many students of WGHS went and participated in this competition along with Charlize Smith. Charlize Smith participated in the dramatic interpretation competition. She said “I did dramatic interpretation which is where you take a piece of literature and interpret it and make it into a monologue.” Although she did amazing, she also went through some challenges as well. “The monologue learning was the hardest part for me only because we had to represent more than two different characters, so I felt like switching between those characters was difficult,” Charlize said when asked about the hardest part of the competition. Charlize was nervous at first about the whole competition and going against other students. “I was really nervous at first, but I just went up there and did what I have been practicing with Mrs. Gibson this entire time, and it ended up working in my favor.” Mrs. Gibson was able to help Charlize prepare for the competition. It’s good to have teachers who prepare students for things like these. The GHSA Literary competition is not as easy as most people think. Charlize had to go against multiple students from different schools. These schools include East Forsyth, North Oconee, Cherokee Bluff, Seckinger, and more. Our region is one of the largest compared to the surrounding others. So being able to receive an award in a competition like this means something special. Charlize said, “I was really excited to win the competition. Me and my teacher put in a lot of hard work and preparation.” In the end, hard work and preparation will always pay off. This was the first time our school participated in this competition for the first time in over 10 years. Charlize exclaims, “It's really exciting, it’s groundbreaking for us and the school.” WGHS hopes to keep on excelling in competitions like these with Amazing students like Charlize Smith. The GHSA literary competition is held every year where you go against people in your region in certain literary competitions. Students compete against other students in different schools. There are competitions like essay writing, debates, monologues, music, and different acting duets. Whatever the student feels comfortable in competing they can participate in.
