In acknowledgement of National Women's History Month, Viridian staff asked some of the female student and teacher population about their passions and how they make themselves feel seen as the month continues.

Mrs. Watson, a science teacher, believes her success is found through her students. Her idol, she says, is Jane Goodall, an anthropologist who changed history in a workplace dominated by men. Watson strives as a scientist to be as great as Goodall. Her biggest accomplishment, she shares, “is being a mom to my daughter, McKenna. She inspires me and brings me joy everyday.”

Ms. Kaitlin Merck says that her idol is Mira Rodan. Merck states, “She is a band director, and she is my role model as a director. She has set so many records for women in the National Band Association.” This sentiment was restated by one of her band students, Senior Ella Whitaker. “She (Ms. Merck) always puts us up to the challenge,” explained Whitaker. “I am a two-time soloist and was brass captain in marching season. [And,] it is only because of my band directors each year.”

Mrs. Rob has two degrees from Ivy League colleges and an Education Specialist degree. “My education. With Education, it is all about preserving,” Rob explained. “And, I think I have proved that.”

Audrey Ta, Senior, has always had a passion for music. “I started out doing music when I was really young. My mom signed me up and I have always loved it.” Audrey is a drum major and soloist in the WGHS Band. She shares how women can be heard through music. “The thing with that is, you aren’t heard individually in a group, but by coming together and making good things happen.”

Alexia Jenkins is an artist in 10th grade. She shares that other women and family members have grown her love for art. “My aunt is one of the reasons why I do this. When she showed me [her artwork], I always thought it was really cool. She says that you can do different pieces in art to feel heard. You can do movements in Women’s Equality. There is actually quite a bit of artwork that shows this.”

In a demonstration of these talents and interests, the women of Walnut Grove keep the spirit of the month alive and growing throughout the year.
