Nicki Minaj has had the music scene in a chokehold ever since her release of the album Pink Friday in 2010. According to billboard charts she was number 2 for R&B hip-hop that year. Now her follow-up album Pink Friday: 2 debuted on December 8, 2023.
Unlike most artists she has never stopped releasing hit songs, ones that have instantly grown to the top of every chart. The announcement of Pink Friday 2 said to come out in October, was made in June of 2023. After her announcement, the anticipation was extremely high and many hoped it would emit the same feeling of originality as the first one. The new album was released on December 8, 2023 and already has climbed to the top of the iTunes chart. It features many popular artists like Drake, Future, J Cole, and even Lil Wayne. The samples in these songs are also a hit. For example her song “Everybody" featuring Lil Uzi Vert samples the beginning of “Move Your Feet” by Junior Senior. This has a huge amount of nostalgia tied to it because I believe mostly everyone has heard this song and can think of a time they've tapped their foot to it. To add to extra nostalgia there are four vinyl editions, two CDs and a digital deluxe edition. The digital version is the most talked about and disliked because of the price of $5 with an extra remix of “Beep Beep” (a song on the album with 50 Cent) for ¢50. It has had some backlash because instead this can be found on YouTube to listen for free along with the rest of the extended album. To talk more about the new album, it begins with a song titled “Are You Gone Already” which samples the Billie Eilish song “When The Party's Over”, which slowly fades into Nicki softly singing about her father who was killed in a car accident. Some fan's didn’t agree with this sample and have said this compared to the other songs felt like "Whiplash". I disagree and think it is her album and she can put whatever she wants on it, even a song for her dad. In comparison to the first Pink Friday, it's very similar but the original will always be better. I personally love the album and think it's beautiful. The bass and 808s sound perfect with the volume of her singing and they pair well together. I also think her flow is unmatchable. My favorite song is “FTCU” because you clearly hear the wonderful flow of her rapping. If you haven't listened to this album I highly recommend listening for the confidence it can give you.
