On the 16th, 17th, and 18th of January, WGHS held soccer tryouts at the WGHS soccer fields for students wanting to play soccer. The teams were posted on the 19th, and players have high hopes for the season.
Varsity Boys On the boys varsity team: Dylan Calvo, Chris Meyers, Guillermo Rubio, Diego Villanueva, Chance Wade, Eddie Aikens, Aidan Bird, Christian Cortez, Dawit Gidey, Brayden Keiser, Stefan Jackson, Josh Mills, Jordan Wolff, Carter Dillard, Jean Franco Loria, Dev Singh, Taylor Forrester, Wyatt Hawkins, and Adam Landers all qualified for the team. Returning senior Dylan Calvo spoke about how far this team can go. “I think that our coach wants us to go to state. So I think that if we practice hard, then we can achieve it.” This team is also very young, but there's already a bit of chemistry. Dylan Clavo stated, “Most of us played together last year so we have some sort of bond. We have some new freshmen that made it this year so overall it is a good spectrum of people.”

Sophomore Lily Kate Holder shared her thoughts on this team’s potential, “I think this year that it will be different from past years in that the team will be more together and more intertwined. A lot of us are friends coming from the same friend groups, and we have seen each other for years and known each other for years.”

Although this team is very young and mostly consists of 8th and 9th graders, they are more confident than ever. One of the three sophomores, Garrison Allen says, “The 8th graders look good, the new 9th graders look really good, I think we will win every game. I think we can win everything.” JV Girls For the girl's junior varsity: Susanna Brody, Hannah Booth, Alannah Burns, Bella Culverson, Sable Harris, Jaylynn Mackenzie, Jillian Ming, Adison Moon, Alyn Moon, Mayce Page, Scout Peterson, Yaindui Rubio-Lima, Yemili Rubio-Luna, Leah Shotwell, Haylie Singleton, Lulu Smoot, and Kylin Wojtczak. This team is looking to develop players throughout the year. Mayce Page (9) said, “I think the team could be really good. I think they have a lot of potential. They all looked good together.” She also stated that the athletes who didn’t make the team have strong skills and have the potential to return to try out next year. This is looking to be a great season for the Walnut Grove Soccer program. Each team is very confident in their abilities and believes they have what it takes.
