Spread the Love with Key Club

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Key Club is preparing to put up paper hearts around the school with sweet sayings to spread love and appreciation to students.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Key Club is preparing to put up paper hearts around the school with sweet sayings to spread love and appreciation to students. 

Mrs. Wheeler, who runs Key Club here at WGHS, says that, “...[the hearts] started as a way just to encourage people on Valentine's Day because not a lot of people have a significant other.” She further explained that there is a lot of pressure around this time of the year because of how the media has manufactured it with all the candy and gifts, and the hearts are a way to avoid all that burden and to just “make it a little bit lowkey and more fun, and this makes it accessible to a lot of people.”

Over the school year, members of the club are required to cut-out at least 50 hearts that will be placed around the school. Anej Beers, vice president of Key Club at WGHS, explains how the students create them. She says, “we make them by cutting them out with a bunch of different colored construction paper, and then we put positive and funny affirmations on them. After that, we tape them around the school.”

​​On Valentine’s Day, Mrs. Wheeler encourages all students of Walnut Grove to take the hearts off the windows of the school and give out to their peers. Audrey Ta, a member of the club, states to give the hearts out to the people around you because “it’s a lot easier to just, like, grab a piece of paper off the window and give it to somebody than it is to tell people that [message] themselves.”
