Stop, Drop, and Roll With It

On August 9th, 2023, students and staff had to evacuate the school due to a false fire alarm caused by the AC unit dripping water on the fire alarm system.

On August 9th, 2023, students and staff had to evacuate the school due to a false fire alarm caused by the AC unit dripping water on the fire alarm system.  

Starting a normal day with students getting dropped off and walking through the halls and getting breakfast turned into a fire alarm fiasco.

Here is what a couple of students had to say about that morning. Amber, a senior at WGHS, said, “I thought there was a fire or that something went off… I was confused. I didn’t know what was going on, and it was annoying.” 

Another response from a senior, Sam Smith, “When the alarm went off, I was in the library and had my earbuds in so it was shocking. I was confused but then I saw my mom (Mrs. Smith) and she said it was probably just the AC.” Sam went on to say that it was hard to keep traffic flowing and, “Everyone was saying that breakfast caught on fire.” 

Makayla Craigmyle, a sophomore at WGHS explained what she thought happened and what she wished happened, “I was in the main hall by the bathrooms with my friend Katie walking to my class when the alarm started to go off and the lights started flashing… I thought a new freshman pulled the fire alarm.” A lot of students were hoping that we would be sent home, “I wanted to go home and go back to bed so I was hoping we would be sent back home after.” Makayla said.

After we got the okay to go back inside our fearless leader, Mr. Allen, came over the announcements to let the students and staff know that it was just the AC unit dripping water on the fire alarm system, causing it to go off. But we did have the okay from the fire department to go back inside and continue our day as normal. Mr. Allen also warned us if it did go off again to stay calm because it would probably be nothing. 

After a mysterious start to the day, everyone went home in the afternoon unharmed.
