Godzilla x Kong came out recently, and this is my review of what I liked about the movie and what could have been better.

Movie Summary

The movie is a sequel to the Godzilla vs Kong that aired in 2021. In that movie Godzilla and Kong were fighting each other but ultimately at the end they had to work together to fight Mechgodzilla. This caused rumors to spread that in the sequel that they would be teaming up again. This ended up being true because in the new movie they not only have to beat one common enemy but an army of them. The main antagonist ended up being Shimo and Scar King, an orangutan differing from the rest of the apes in the movie other than Suko who has the similar orange tinted hair.

At the start of the movie Godzilla is on our earth, sleeping in the Colosseum of Rome waiting for Kaijus to emerge. Kong on the other hand is in the Earth’s core searching for any other members of his family. Then a research base in the Earth’s core gets attacked, so they go investigate it. On arrival they see claw marks and check the camera and see an ape-like eye looking into it before getting destroyed. Now they are on edge because there is some other life force that they have no idea about.

Whilst investigating, Jia, the lone survivor of the Iwi tribe of Skull Island, is getting signals from an unknown source. The character of Jia is played by Kaylee Hottle, who is not only playing a deaf character in the movie but is from a 4th generation exclusively deaf family.

Once the group figures out that the signals are from an extension of the tribe of Iwi that are located in the Earth’s core they meet them and see who was behind the attack on the research base. They see Jia is the final piece they need so they can release Mothra which will help Godzilla and Kong defeat the ape army who are trying to take over the surface Earth.

Malachi's Take

I think this movie was made to perfection. It's not easy to tell a story where half of the characters in it don't speak. Yet this movie captured it perfectly with a good story line that was easy and understandable. I also liked how they have the Iwi tribe not speak like Jia since she is deaf and they communicate telepathically. It would be weird if we were speaking a language that the explorers would not know and then Jia wouldn’t be able to understand because she wouldn’t be able to hear them. I was wondering after the first movie how they would communicate with one another. Not only was the story line good but the fight scenes had everyone in the movie theater hyped. Especially when Kong and Scar King were fighting because it was exactly what we wanted to see in the fight and more.

The only scenes that had me confused were when they were in Earth’s core and gravity was changing, so they floated up and then fell. It was really weird how not only were they fighting while falling but they were falling for a good while for them to be hundreds of feet tall that might have been a stretch.

Godzilla x Kong is a newly released movie coming out March 29, 2024 already having a 6.5 rating on IMDb with over 400 reviews. It features actors like Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, and of course Kaylee Hottle.
