Social media is a big part of freedom, but does people take it too far?

Social media can be a big part of teens’ life, when they use social media teens’ can use they platform for self expression or entertainment. But, some people can actually harm other people. Some examples contain of exposing them to bullying, see unrealistic videos of peoples lives, messing with their sleep schedule, and peer pressure, or can start eating disorders.

Kids can be afraid to go to school because people are posting videos or photos about them. Even this can cause depression and anxiety in teens. People can see other girls or even guys from their school post photos and they compare themselves on how skinny or athletic they are, and can really take a toll on their mental health. “How teens use social media also might determine its impact. A 2015 study found that social comparison and feedback seeking by teens using social media and cellphones was linked with depressive symptoms. In addition, a small 2013 study found that older adolescents who used social media passively, such as by just viewing others' photos, reported declines in life satisfaction. Those who used social media to interact with others or post their own content didn't experience these declines.” (Teens and social media)

Parents can step in and help their children from not experiencing mental health problems:
  • limit their screen time
  • encourage having face to face conversations with some friends
  • explain to them what no ok to do
  • talk to a doctor if you see a mental decline in your child

Remember, never compare yourself, and you are perfect the way you are.
