On January 7th, Filmmakers and Actors got together and celebrated the best movies and television shows of the year 2023. The event in Beverly Hills had many laughs shared, many jokes told, and an enraging controversy. Jo Koy made a joke about the Barbie movie, which has received a lot of backlash from audiences.
Controversy at the Globes
Felix Menendez (Junior) defended the Barbie movie by saying, “You can’t judge a movie based on [the money] they made because they both took time to make." Felix believes, “The Barbie movie took longer to make because it had to be written and they put work in to get it made, while Oppenheimer was just already [a book]. So therefore it was an overall harder project to work on and should be supported by everyone.”
Bryon Rice (Junior) gives his insight on the situation stating, “Jo Koy’s jokes were just jokes and shouldn’t be taken seriously or as harmful. Barbie is just a movie about a doll and Oppenheimer was a genuine tragedy and educational film.”
Bryon also states his favorite movies and his picks for the best movies that should’ve been chosen at the ceremony, “My expectations were high for the Five Nights at Freddy’s film because I wanted it to be more scary. And my overall favorite movie was Spider-Man and I think it should’ve won an award for being the best movie this year.”
Shannon Hayes (Junior) says “Jo Koy very clearly didn’t watch the movie or didn’t understand the movie because he misrepresented what the movie was about. It is true what he said, but the movie was about Barbie as more than just a doll. The joke was superficial and was not good at all.”
Jazmyne Black (Junior) when asked about Jo Koy’s joke, hastily responded, “I don’t want to talk about this!” For Jazmyne, the Barbie movie truly meant something to her, and Jo Koy’s joke took a shot directly at it.
Sadie McManus (Junior) was very excited for the Barbie movie and claimed that it was the best movie of 2023, “The joke contradicts everything that the movie was about. The joke was offensive and shameful. The joke was horrible and not funny at all."
The Award Winners
Although the night started out rough with Jo Koy, the night was still filled with excitement. Many people won awards and had a good time. Christopher Nolan won the award for Best Director for a Motion Picture for his work on Oppenheimer. The Boy and The Heron won Best Animated Motion Picture. Oppenheimer won Best Drama Motion Picture. Oppenheimer’s Ludwig Gӧransson won Best Original Score. Billie Ellish and Finneas O’Connell won Best Original Song. Ali Wong won Best Female Actor Performance in Television. Cillian Murphy won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture. Robert Downey Jr. won Best Male Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. Kieran Culkin won Best Performance by a Male Actor in Television (GoldenGlobes.com).
In short, the Golden Globes was another successful night and a great way to celebrate all of Hollywood’s hard work of 2023. Although Jo Koy’s jokes offended many people, it shouldn’t distract from the truly talented people who deserve their rewards.
