The Grammys Flopped

The 2024 GRAMMYs were somewhat disappointing to WGHS students Rei Holmes (Sophomore), and Nevaeh Patrick (Junior).

Nevaeh Patrick said, “I feel like, when it comes to the Grammys, there’s always mixed emotions when it comes to who deserved these awards and who didn’t.” She continued to say that she was content with who won, but also says, “I think some of the people that won deserved it, and I think some of them it was like for a moment type of thing, like SZA, I thinks she deserved her award, definitely, and Victoria Monet I think she deserved that award 100%. For big artists like Snoop Dogg, they've been nominated so many times, but they’ve never gotten an award; it’s very mixed.”

She says Victoria Monet and SZA constantly have hits and their songs are always popular when it finally drops. “Compared to artists that just came about because of TikTok. Tiktok can obviously help your music grow and your brand, but I feel like their song only went famous because it was on Tiktok, you know how people only sing like one little part of the song, like Ice spice, her music was only really going famous ‘cause it was on TikTok.” She remembered an incident from one of Steve Lacy’s concerts when he put the mic out to let the crowd sing the rest of the song, and it went silent. 

She ends by saying she thinks some artists definitely should have won over others, but she’s okay with the outcome. “Snoop Dogg, he should have been got an award, I definitely think Lana Del Ray should have gotten one. A lot of people are mad because Taylor Swift got one, but I honestly expected Taylor to get it, ‘cause it’s Taylor.”





​Rei Holmes starts off by saying she felt that Taylor shouldn’t have won for "Anti-Hero", one of her songs from her album Midnights that dropped in October of 2022. “I feel like it wasn’t that good of a song. I feel like Lana should’ve got that award.” Rei also feels that some artists were really random and shouldn’t have been nominated. “I wanted Lana to win because she hasn’t won one of them before, and she has so many good albums, and the people that won win every year,” she states. 

Killer Mike, a rapper, won best rap album of the year. Both students had no idea who Killer Mike was and agreed that the album does not deserve the title it was given. Rei says, “I don’t know who he is. I seriously did not know who Killer Mike was.” Nevaeh also says, "I don’t even know who that is! I didn’t even hear the song that he got nominated for.” She also said people said, “How does bro win three Grammys and get locked up in the same day?” 

ABCNews.com says, “[Killer Mike] was arrested on a misdemeanor charge Sunday night shortly after winning three Grammys, [and] was detained and handcuffed by police just after 4 p.m. PT. Police took him into custody over an alleged physical altercation at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court, one of the streets just outside the Crypto.com Arena, which is where the Grammys were held.”
