WGHS Students Jayla Lewis and Destiny Brown give us their Hot Takes on K-pop in the music industry.
The genre K-Pop [Korean Pop] has been on the rise in the music industry. Every day more and more people listen to this type of music, and it's becoming popular worldwide. People have their personal feelings about the genre as a whole. Junior Jayla Lewis says, “K-pop is really my stuff like I listen to it 24/7 everyday.” Like Jayla’s statement, Junior Destiny Brown says, “Honestly, it's one of my favorites right now.” The growing popularity of the genre has left people with their own feelings about it. While some fans like to gate-keep and hold all the glory of K-pop to themselves, Destiny and Jayla aren’t like that. “Honestly, I’m okay with [the growing popularity], but we know who the originals are,” Destiny states. “Beautiful, [the new fame is] wonderful. You have to share that culture, spread the culture,” Jayla States. Destiny’s favorite part about K-Pop are the performances. “The makeup artists and just everything that goes into making a performance, it's just great.” In contrast, Jayla likes the way that they dress, “...even though half of the time it be ugly, but it’s unique; that's why.” Billboard says the K-Pop group Straykids won a MTV Music Video Award for best K-Pop music video for their song “S-Class”. Today's listeners might agree with some of these statements. The original listeners of K-Pop since the beginning are hopefully seeing the positive recognition that the genre deserves.
