The UFL? What is that?

The UFL is the combination of two former leagues, the XFL and the USFL. The UFL was announced on December 31st, 2023 by Fox. The founders are former WWE Superstar and Hollywood Actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Film Producer Dani Garcia.

How does the UFL Work?    
The UFL is a national football season played during the spring. It hosts a total of 43 games: 40 regular season games, two Conference Championship games and one Championship game to win it all. The Championship game is played against the two teams that played the best during the season. However, the rules are different from the NFL rules. 

After a touchdown, teams have three options for extra points: 

• 1-point try from the 2-yard line
• 2-point try from the 5-yard line
• 3-point try from the 10-yard line

Overtime rules are simple. Each team gets an attempt to score from the opponent’s 5-yard line. It alternates between teams. It is a best-of-three series until a winner is decided.

UFL History    
The UFL is simply a combination of the XFL and USFL. An article on the XFL was run in 2022 from the VIRIDIAN News. 

 The XFL was founded in the early 2000s, by Vince McMahon, but was soon shut down after just one season. It was then found again in 2019, and held a draft for the players. Unfortunately, the league was canceled mid-season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The season made a return in 2023 after years of failed collaboration talks, and now is merging with the USFL. The USFL on the other hand, has been much more successful than the XFL. It started in 1982, but only lasted four seasons. It was then founded again in 2022 after almost 40 years of non-existence. 

The ratings for the XFL and USFL were very close, with the USFL outlasting the XFL, 604,175 vs. 602,073 (via NBC Sports PFT).

This year, the UFL season will begin on March 30th, 2024. The eight teams that will participate this season will be Birmingham Stallions, Houston Roughnecks, Memphis Showboats, Michigan Panthers, Arlington Renegades, D.C. Defenders, San Antonio Brahams and St. Louis Battlehawks. The first two games of the season will be the Birmingham Stallions vs. the Arlington Renegades at 1:00 PM ET and the St. Louis Battlehawks vs. the Michigan Panthers at 4:00 PM ET.
