WGHS students Mea Wolcott, Sarah Thomas, and Samuel Camarena talk about the play that took place on December 8th and 9th.
Opening night can be very scary for some, Samuel Camarena (Junior) states, “Getting ready for the show was genuinely exhilarating, and it always is..” He explains that the cast members had to apply heavy makeup before they put on costumes.“ it was interesting to see everyone put on costumes without smudging their makeup” Samuel played the role of Aramis, the third musketeer. “My favorite part in the play was that scene where the Three Musketeers and the main character, D'artagnan, fought the villain guards. The stage combat was very enjoyable to do.” Samuel says his favorite character was Sabine, who was played by Jazmyne Black. Her character was so spunky and she played it extremely well. He also says it's a relief to be done memorizing all the lines and blocking. It's always a challenge to remember everything. He finishes by saying, “Putting on these performances are honestly some times of my life I hope I never forget. In the days leading up to show day, many members of the cast feel a lack of confidence in their show. As the shows go on, confidence increases, as well as enjoyability.” Sarah (Senior) says, “It was fun. The months leading up to it, I was working on the sets ‘cause I was the set designer. …I was figuring out how scenes should look, where should pieces be on the stage, [or] when should they move. Sarah says, “I was the sets designer, or “head of sets”, which means that I had control of all of the stuff on stage... like the sets, lights and sounds. …I had some other people from different organizations and also different parts of tech help me out so I was never really alone doing [setting up] which made it a lot more fun because I got to collaborate with other people.” She finishes by saying they didn’t get to actually run it with sets until like a week or two before the show, but that was kind of when everything came together if that makes sense. She really liked all of the fight scenes because another thing she did in the show was make a sound using two metal pipes every time the swords hit together to like immediate sword noise and that was a lot of fun. D'artagnan, which Mea played, was her favorite because he was kinda funny, and because Mea Wolcott (Senior) played him. “I also really liked Athos, who was one of the main musketeers because he just was constantly like a comedic relief character and so he had a lot of really good one liners.” She ended. She concludes by saying, “I do like miss getting to see everyone every day, but I do like being able to go home at 3 rather than going home at like 6 or 7 at night… I think it went really well, we had really good shows. I feel like every show went really well and it was a lot of fun.” Mea Wolcott had a different experience preparing for the show. “It was pretty stressful, for me at least..” She continues, “..because I got the part late so I had to learn everything in a shorter amount of time.” Despite the late casting, she enjoyed coming up with finding choreography and stage props. She played D’Artagnan, the main character who is trying to become a musketeer. “I get cast as a guy a lot, which is slightly concerning, but it was very fun..” Her character is very enthusiastic about everything. “..it was very fun to play a character who’s having fun no matter what’s going on.” “The Cardinal was definitely a favorite [character] of mine, Natalie played that one, and Natalie is phenomenal at everything..” Mea favored that character because the character had a lot of comedic moments. “...because it’s like supposed to be the villain, so it was a good balance.” One of her favorite scenes is when the show reaches its climax, which is when Constance dies. “Kaylan, who plays Constance, always did a really, really good job 'cause she has to act scared... And Light, who plays M’lady, is perfect at being intimidating.” She emphasizes how cool it was watching them act together. “Then it was also sort of a challenge because I had to be traumatized over the fact that my girlfriend just died,” she adds. Mea explains how she felt on show night. “I actually felt the best about it [the play] the night of the show... I was nervous obviously right before it happened.” She goes into further detail, “After the first scene, and I was sort of getting into being aware like Okay, yeah, this is it, we’re performing it. That was like a really good feeling.” She ends by saying, “I felt the most confident about it. I was really excited that people were seeing it and I was just proud of it.” The WGHS drama department never fails to put on a good show with even greater actors. Later this school year they are performing their spring musical, Tuck Everlasting. We cannot wait to see all of the amazing things they will have in store.
