The track team held its Regional Tune up at Walnut Grove on Tuesday, April 11th. Our team has been through an incredible season, and as they prepare for their upcoming challenges, Coach Abner is impressed with his team and confident in their performance.
“I think after spring break and having a week off, then having the athletes come back out, we just went out and competed,” Abner commented. “We set two new school records, boys 4x100 and girls 4x100. It’s just kind of getting the cobwebs out after being out a week.” The team scored 104 and 170 for the girls and boys, respectively. Coach further explained that, “Regionals are Tuesday and Thursday of next week, so hopefully we’ll‒you know we got a few days to get ready‒then we’ll go out there and compete against 10 other teams.” Tuesday will hold preliminary events for all running and field events, and whoever makes the running finals will return Thursday. “I’m excited, obviously, ready to go compete against our region and see how many athletes we can take to Sectionals.”
The school's 4x800 team scored first in their event, and overall this season has performed fairly well for having 3 starting years on the team. Adrian Garcia (11), Isaac Mulkey(12), Ean Mulkey (10), and Ian McKenzie(9) scored 9:52.57, a full 20 second difference off the team behind them.
“Our team, honestly, we were slower than we needed to be,” Admitted Adrian Garcia. “Region Tune-up is not a good show of our ability, especially on our home track. But at Regions, we can definitely do better.”
Ean Mulkey said similarly, “I feel like, as a team, we did good, but individually we did bad. Upcoming Regional, as long as everyone stays at practice, we’re going to do great.”
“I feel pretty confident, we actually just had our girls break their personal records for the 4x400 and the 4x100,” Confessed Isaac Mulkey. “And for the guys, we got some guys who can move. And personally I’m feeling good. I'm running the 800 and the 4x800, and going into it I’m thinking I’m going to do pretty well.” Overall, the warriors are confident in their teams, and in their own abilities, to perform well in the following races to come.
