On Thursday March 23rd, 2023, the Varsity Boys Baseball team played an unfamiliar foe. The team played the Glenwood Gators who came all the way from Smiths Station, Alabama, 2 hours and 25 minutes away. The Boys Varsity team came up short, falling in a 4-1 effort. It is unknown the reason why the Warriors scheduled a game against the Gators (to our knowledge), but the game did not disappoint.
The Walnut Grove Warrior VB1 Baseball team opened the season going 10-3, including big wins over St. Francis (11-0)2, Forest Park (13-1), and East Hall (11-2). Currently sitting at an 11-7 record (.650%), the Warriors will look to add onto it Wednesday March 29th, as they face off against Madison County for a three game series.
The game was a strong effort by Coach Allen and the boys. Glenwood is usually a good team, proven by their 21-3 record in their region, followed by an 11-0 home record.
(Photo taken by Ben Tankersley | Correspondent) WGHS Varsity Baseball Head Coach, Carl Allen, spoke on the team. “For the most part. [I’m] proud of how we’ve performed, how we’ve had to respond to some situations, sometimes we could be a little better, but overall they’re doing a really good job.” He then talked about playing Glenwood and why it was rather strange due to the fact they are an out-of-state team. “It came down to scheduling. They were coming over because they were on Spring Break, and we were in our region bye... They’re traditionally a very good team, so any time we can get a quality opponent on the schedule, we try to.” WGHS VB Baseball player, Alec Clayton, talked about the team and what they need to do during the final stretch of the season. “We need to just do the routine stuff right, things like fielding, as long as we field right, we’ll be good.” He then explained what upcoming players need to do to make Varsity. “Just keep working. You know you’ll have to practice a lot- just take it serious.”
On April 24th and 25th, the GHSA (Georgia High School Association) State Playoffs begin.
The GHSA State Baseball Playoff is a three-week-long tournament with each region having eight teams, totaling 32 teams in a bracket (similar to NCAA March Madness). Just like the basketball State Playoffs, the team who wins each game will advance to the next round to take on the winner from the previous round in that portion of the bracket. Once there are regional winners, also known as the Final Four, the region winners will play the other, and the winners advance to the Championship on May 16th and 17th. The Warriors have eight remaining regular season games until the GHSA. The final stretch should be very interesting for Warrior baseball fans.
